Carter Bryant, Tarris Reed and Spurs to watch for in Summer League

San Antonio Spurs forward Carter Bryant participates in a shootaround before Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinals against the Minnesota Timberwolves at Target Center in Minneapolis on Friday, May 8, 2026.
SAN FRANCISCO — There isn’t much Spurs assistant coach Corliss Williamson hasn’t accomplished on the basketball court.
He has been an NCAA national champion at Arkansas. He was an NBA champion with Detroit in 2004.
After a long and winding career as an NBA assistant, with previous stops in Sacramento, Orlando, Phoenix and Minnesota, Williamson last month at last coached in the NBA Finals with the Spurs.
Come Friday in San Francisco, the 52-year-old Williamson will do something he’s never done before.
He will act as the Spurs’ head coach in Summer League.
“This is the first time,” Williamson said. “So I’m pretty excited.”
Typically, a gig coaching in NBA Summer League is reserved for up-and-coming assistants looking to make a name for themselves.
Head coach Mitch Johnson, WNBA championship coach Becky Hammon and current and former NBA coaches Ime Udoka, Jacque Vaughn, Will Hardy and Mike Budenholzer all manned the position for the Spurs over the years.
For various reasons, that honor escaped Williamson. As recently as last summer, he was tabbed to coach Minnesota’s Summer League team — but left to take a spot on Johnson’s bench in San Antonio before he could do it.
“It seems like every time I was having the opportunity to be a head coach for Summer League, I either took another job or unfortunately early in my career (coaching staffs Williams was part of) got fired in a couple situations,” Williamson said. “I was able to this year, so I’m definitely excited about this chance.”
For Spurs fans who have yet to catch their breath after the team’s unexpected run to the NBA Finals last month, there is further cause for excitement.
The Spurs open play at the California Classic with a game against Miami on Friday at the Chase Center. The team will play two additional games in San Francisco before moving on to the Las Vegas Summer League on July 9.
Here are five things to know as Williamson and the Spurs get set to tip off Summer League:
1. Jayden Quaintance will be but a large spectator
The Spurs used the 20th pick in the June draft to select the Kentucky big man knowing it would take a beat for his career to get off the ground.
Quaintance tore his right ACL 24 games into his freshman season at Arizona State, and played in only four contests after transferring to Kentucky for his sophomore season. On draft night, Quaintance said he has another procedure still to come to clean up the meniscus in his troublesome knee.
With all that in mind, the Spurs are not expecting the crown jewel of their 2026 draft class to be available for Summer League.
Quaintance is on the Summer Spurs’ roster and is expected to travel with the team to both San Francisco and Las Vegas. He will not practice or play, however.
2. This will (eventually) be Carter Bryant’s show
Not-so-fresh after logging minutes in the NBA Finals, the second-year forward is the marquee name on the Spurs’ summer roster.
Williamson hopes Bryant will use the time to spread his wings and work on parts of his offensive game without having to worry about players like Victor Wembanyama, De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle needing touches.
On the Summer Spurs, Bryant is set to be the go-to guy.
Eventually.
The Spurs are giving Bryant the San Francisco portion of the Summer League schedule off. He is expected to gain reps once the festivities shift to Las Vegas.

San Antonio Spurs forward Carter Bryant (11) goes up for a shot around Portland Trail Blazers center Robert Williams III (35) during Game 3 of a first-round NBA playoff series at Moda Center in Portland, Friday, April 24, 2026. The Spurs defeated the Trail Blazers 120-108 to lead the series 2-1.
3. Who is the name to watch in San Francisco then?
That would be the Spurs’ other first-round pick, Connecticut center Tarris Reed Jr.
The Spurs traded with Denver to move back into the first round on draft night, selecting Reed No. 26 overall.
The 22-year-old Reed — known for his rebounding, toughness, and defensive ruggedness — will be the Spurs’ showpiece in San Francisco.
Granted, the things Reed does best aren’t flashy. Nobody will stop to rewind the DVR to watch a classic defensive box-out or perfectly executed screen.
Those are the things that help win basketball games, and they are the things that could potentially get Reed on the floor as a rookie.
The California Classic will provide Reed with his first glimpses of that at the NBA level.
4. An open audition for two-way contracts
In addition to the Spurs’ two first-round picks, the summer roster includes a pair of second-round selections as well.
The stakes are high for former Tennessee guard Ja’Kobi Gillespie and ex-Duke forward Maliq Brown.
The Spurs only have two open spots on their full 15-man roster. It is unlikely either of the second-round picks fills one of those voids.
More than likely, Gillespie and Brown are vying for one of the Spurs’ two available two-way contracts.
Two players who finished last season with two-way contracts for the Spurs, Harrison Ingram and David Jones-Garcia, remain on the club’s radar — though neither are participating in Summer League.
The upshot is that Gillespie and Brown will need to show the Spurs something in a hurry in order to make a case for sticking around. That starts in San Francisco.
5. Emanuel Miller needs a big summer, too
The 26-year-old Miller is still under two-way contract with the Spurs. But those deals are eminently fungible, and the Spurs can easily jettison Miller if a better option surfaces.
A 6-foot-5 forward who played collegiately at Texas A&M and TCU, Miller did not log a second of playing time with the Spurs after signing a two-way deal last February.
He did play in 11 games with Chicago over the past two seasons, making him one of three members of the Summer Spurs’ roster with NBA experience. Bryant and Miles Kelly – a 23-year-old guard who made 14 appearances with Dallas last season – are the others.
The Spurs obviously saw enough in Miller to give him a two-way contract and a spot on the Summer League team. It will be up to him to make the invitation worthwhile.
