Donovan made a name for himself as the head coach at the University of Florida from 1996-2015, where he won back-to-back championships in 2006 and 2007. He joined the NBA in 2015 as head coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder, where the made the playoffs in each of his five years there, including the conference finals his first season. He then spent the last six seasons as head coach of the Chicago Bulls, where they were mostly a bubble team under his watch. He stepped down after this season, citing “a series of thoughtful and extensive discussions with ownership regarding the future of the organization. … I believe it is in the best interest of the Bulls, to allow the new leader to build out the staff as they see fit.”

While his success levels as an NBA head coach don’t match his college days, his strengths align perfectly with what the Spurs need (and lost with Sweeney’s departure). Exactly why I think Billy will be a good assistant coach. Mitch had more success in his first year than Billy did in his whole career. Billy has good ideas and I think he was a mediocre coach, not one of the bottom ones. He wasn’t end-of-career Doc Rivers or anything. Working in a less front-facing role should help his strengths be the focus.

It’s funny, but I think this is also how Donovan gets better. This is how Mike Brown got better. He made it with the Spurs and then went on to HC elsewhere. He wasn’t seen as a full positive, but now he’s got his bumps and bruises (and assistant coached years with GSW) and is a solid coach, now.

on the surface, this is exactly what I wanted: an extremely experienced former-head coach to stand beside mitch to iron out the young coach kinks we saw come to head in the finals. Hey there, Bulls fan here. His coaching had some serious issues. The DeRozan/Lavine era was a borderline nightmare. Instead of giving minutes to developmental guys, he focused on giving a LOT of minutes to the aging DeRozan instead. He’s also deathly allergic to allowing players to take mid-range shots. He believes in making every shot a 3-pointer or a layup. It’s borderline ruined Buzelis. He also claims to allow players to make mistakes, but it’s absolutely not true.

I tell you what, Mitch is a very confident man. That’s a great trait for a HC. He has hired assistants that are better than him in some respects. Good job coach Mitch. We need coach Donovan to “refine the players bball IQ” they could use some help being very talented but inexperienced young guys that they are, like drive to the hoop when opponents are in penalty, get those and1s, don’t settle for bricking outside shots, don’t overhelp, etc. This is wonderful news!

I read Bulls had the second best offense out of timeouts last season. Spurs were meh out of timeouts for the most part, so this will be good. I expect Billy will be a 1-2 year rental at most.
