评级:A

Grades: Spurs Bring Back Julian Champagnie, Harrison Barnes

Although NBA free agency starts later today, the San Antonio Spurs took care of some in-house business on Monday. First, the Spurs declined their team option on Julian Champagnie and then signed him to a new three-year contract. After that news broke, it was announced that the Spurs were re-signing Harrison Barnes to a one-year deal.

Here are the grades for these two Spurs transactions:

Spurs Sign Julian Champagnie to a Three-Year, $45 Million Contract

Grade: A

This was a very good outcome for San Antonio. With media speculation estimating that Champagnie could get a contract valued at upwards of $100 million, the Spurs retained him for less than half of that number.

Last season, Champagnie proved himself as a championship-level starting wing. In the regular season, he averaged 11.1 points per game while shooting 43.7% from the field and 38.1% from three-point range. In the playoffs, he averaged 11.2 points and shot even better: 44.4% from the field, 39.6% from three.

Additionally, Champagnie played all 82 games for the second straight season, blossomed as a leader in the locker room and improved his rebounding to a near elite rate for a wing. Add in the facts that he turned 25 on Monday, he has improved his defense every year and he has become a progressively steadier player and it’s clear that he’s unquestionably one of the most important building blocks on the team.

The Spurs could have brought Champagnie back on a deal that paid him $3 million for the 2026-27 season. But he would have become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

Now, the Spurs will pay Champagnie a reported $15.35 million in the 2026-27 season, $15 million in the 2027-28 campaign and $14.65 million in the final season. To put those numbers in perspective, that means Champagnie will be making less than 9.5% of the salary cap next season and less than 7.5% of the cap by the final season.

The declining nature of the contract is also a plus for San Antonio. The salary cap situation for the Spurs will become tighter and tighter as the seasons go along so paying Champagnie the most money next year will help keep the team together.

How did the Spurs get Champagnie to agree to a below market value contract? It’s mostly due to that team option. San Antonio had the leverage that they could simply bring him back for $3 million. In addition to the ever-present risk of injury, Champagnie’s camp had to weigh the risk of a player like Carter Bryant ascending into a starting caliber player or the Spurs bringing in another player in free agency who could soak up some of Champagnie’s minutes.

Also, give Champagnie credit for doing his part in keeping the core together. He could have played hardball but instead he gets a $12 million immediate raise while avoiding the distractions that would have arisen if the two sides weren’t able to come to a compromise.

All in all, the front office has to be thrilled by how this all played out. Back when the Spurs signed Champagnie to a four-year, $12 million deal in 2023 that featured a team option on the final season, this was always the best case scenario. Champagnie outplayed that contract and the Spurs were able to retain some leverage to keep him on a team-friendly deal through his prime years. This was the reward for taking a bit of a risk on an unproven player three years ago. Well played.

Spurs Agree to a One-Year, $8 Million Contract with Harrison Barnes

Grade: B

Yeah, this is fine. Barnes struggled for a lot of last season, particularly when the stakes got higher, but he still has a place in the league. At the end of the day he’s a 6-foot-7 forward who can hit three-pointers and be relied upon to be ready.

Basketball-wise, Barnes is clearly near the end of his career. He’s 34 years old and he lost a step last season. He’s a poor rebounder, an inconsistent defender and not much of a playmaker. But I think it’s safe to say that he’ll shoot well enough to absorb regular season minutes at a near league average clip.

Unfortunately, Barnes hit 23.1% of his threes in the playoffs last season — and that didn’t appear to be a fluke. The better the Spurs got and the brighter the lights became, the less accurate Barnes shot the ball. He’s never been a superb playoff performer and that’s not going to start now.

But, hey, a one-year contract that doesn’t impact San Antonio’s ability to sign other free agents is about as painless as it gets. Especially when you consider that his contract can be utilized as trade ballast at some point in the future.

Furthermore, by all accounts Barnes is a great veteran to have around. As far as veteran leaders and role models go, he could be near the very top of the list. He’s an outstanding person who goes out of his way to show other players what it means to be a professional athlete. That type of leadership is valuable, especially on a team like the Spurs that will be comprised mostly of youngsters.

Overall, this is a very low risk move for the Spurs. Barnes lost his spot in the starting lineup last season and then lost his spot in the rotation completely as the Spurs rode deeper into the postseason. He never complained and never wavered. If he finds himself on the outside of the rotation this coming season, the Spurs won’t have to worry about him becoming a distraction.

Final Thoughts

These two moves not only made sense in a vacuum, the transactions retained all of San Antonio’s financial flexibility. The Spurs still have access to the Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception, which will allow the franchise to offer a free agent a contract that begins at approximately $15 million and that could be worth around $65 million over four years.

The Spurs can also opt to use the Bi-Annual Exception, which has a starting salary of $5.5 million. All told, the good guys should easily be able to fill out their roster without bumping into the luxury tax line.

Locking up Champagnie for three years was a vital move to keep the momentum flowing in the right direction from last year’s squad. Bringing back Barnes doesn’t hurt in the pocketbook, should be a neutral move on the court and will undoubtedly help in the locker room. Net-net, this was a very good start to free agency for the Spurs.
