In the midst of a career season, Spurs forward Julian Champagnie received a ringing endorsement from an important source.
"We trust him,” Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama said last January after Champagnie had 12 points, 13 rebounds and a key block in crunch time in a 100-95 victory at Boston.
“The front office, the coaching staff, everybody believes in him and he’s just capitalizing on that," Wembanyama added. "It’s like we can’t do without him now. He’s a big part of this. He’s indispensable.”
The Spurs front office agreed, signing Champagnie to a multi-year contract extension on Monday that a league source said is worth $45 million over three years. The deal, which will keep him under the club’s control through the 2028-29 season, was finalized after the club declined his $3 million team option.
The transaction broke fittingly on Champagnie’s 25th birthday.
The Spurs are rewarding Champagnie after his previous team-friendly four-year, $12 million pact paid him $3 million last season.

Champagnie averaged 11.1 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists – all career highs – while playing in all 82 games last season and logging 68 starts. He connected on 38.1% from beyond the arc on a career-high 6.2 attempts per game, spacing the floor for Wembanyama, who showered the New York City native with praise throughout the season.
Champagnie also had a strong playoff run, averaging 11.2 points while shooting 39.6% from distance to go with 5.4 rebounds, 1.6 assists and a team-best 1.3 steals in a four-round run that ended with the Spurs losing to the Knicks in five games.
Champagnie went undrafted in 2022 after starring at St. John’s University. He entered the league on a two-way deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, who waived him in 2023 to make room for Mac McClung, who won three straight Slam Dunk contests between 2023-25 but has played only sparingly in the NBA.
“I thought it was over, I ain’t going to lie to you,” Champagnie said, recalling how emotional he was when the Sixers let him go as a 21-year-old rookie.
But the Spurs claimed Champagnie two days on a two-way deal. Finding a home in San Antonio, Champagnie has started in 156 games over the last three seasons and will enter next season with a consecutive games played streak of 185 games over the past three regular seasons.
During the West finals, Julian recalled his mindset after the Spurs signed him off waivers in 2023.
"I put my head down, said, ‘Make it work. Whatever they give you, make it work. Whatever they need you to do, make it work, and just find that spot on the team,’ " he said.
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson praised Champagnie during the Western Conference finals for his all-around play and leadership.
“He’s had games where he’s missed shots and he’s had double-digit rebounds,” Johnson said. “His spacing causes gravity, whether he makes shots or not. And at times when we haven’t scored, he’s made huge shots. He’s been an absolute unsung hero because some of those other guys have the basketball in their hands more and they’re probably a part of maybe more highlights other than making threes. And Julian’s been an integral part of our team defense, team rebounding, and all that leads to us playing fast, which is our best version of our offense.”
