What Jayden Quaintance, Spurs draft picks said about their new home

Spurs rookies Maliq Brown, from left, Jayden Quaintance, Ja’Kobi Gillespie and Tarris Reed Jr. hold up their jerseys as they pose with Spurs general manager Brian Wright during an introductory news conference at Victory Capital Performance Center, Thursday, June 25, 2026, in San Antonio.
Spurs first-round pick Jayden Quaintance wore jersey No. 21 at both Kentucky and Arizona State, but he quickly learned that he’d have to get used to some new digits in the NBA.
In San Antonio, No. 21 is reserved for Hall of Famer Tim Duncan — a reality the Spurs staff made clear for Quaintance straightaway.
“They cut that off quickly, I’m not going to lie,” Quaintance said with a smile. “As soon as I got drafted they were like, ‘Here’s a couple number options that you’ll have.’ They killed that dream pretty fast.”

The Spurs introduced their newcomers from this week’s draft in a media event Thursday at the Victory Capital Performance Center, with No. 20 pick Quaintance as the top selection from a group that also includes No. 26 pick Tarris Reed and second-round selections Ja’Kobi Gillespie and Maliq Brown.
Here’s what they had to say about their new home:
Jayden Quaintance
The No. 1 question around the 6-foot-9 forward is his health, as a tear in his right ACL suffered as a freshman at Arizona State was a lingering issue at Kentucky last year, limiting him to just four games.
He said Tuesday he still needs a clean-up surgery to repair some meniscus damage before he can begin his NBA career, but the details going forward remain unclear.
“I don’t know anything concrete all the way yet, but I know here they said their priority is making sure I’m 100% and fully healthy,” Quaintance said. “I’m just trusting the medical staff here that they’re going to put me in the best position to be successful.”

Tarris Reed
The 6-foot-10 center enters the NBA with some extra motivation after his college career at Connecticut ended with a loss to Michigan in the national championship game.
With the Spurs coming off a loss in the NBA Finals, Reed expects to mesh well with the team’s mentality as he manages his own heartbreak.
“That was probably the toughest moment of my life,” Reed said. “It’s an indescribable feeling. It’s tough. It’s uncomfortable. It definitely sticks with me a little bit to this day, I’m not going to lie. But just having a group of guys that went through that last year with San Antonio, that’s going to be huge for us next year, having that chip on our shoulder and wanting to make things right.”

Reed’s pedigree at Connecticut will also pay off with his connection to Spurs guard Stephon Castle, who won a national title with the Huskies in 2024.
Reed spent his first two college seasons at Michigan, arriving at Connecticut to play under Dan Hurley the year following Castle’s departure.
“Just knowing I have another fellow UConn Husky to play alongside with this year is going to be pretty special,” Reed said. “Definitely going to talk about some cool, crazy, funny Hurley stories, or something he went through that we both went through playing in that program. Just excited to play with another Husky.”

Reed had a look of surprise on his face when his name was called in the draft. He received a text from his representation letting him know he was heading to San Antonio, but he assumed there might have been a mistake when he didn’t hear from the Spurs before the pick was announced on television.
“I was like, ‘Oh, man. I’m probably not going to San Antonio. Something might have messed up,’” Reed said. “So, when they called my name, when I saw my name on the screen, that was my pure, genuine, raw reaction. I’m going to San Antonio, so I’m just excited and blessed to be here.”

Ja’Kobi Gillespie
A 22-year-old guard from Tennessee who also played at Maryland and Belmont, Gillespie spoke about how he thrives as an undersized player at 6-foot.
“I’ve always been the smallest player, so I think just growing up like that got me ready to play at a high level,” Gillespie said. “I just think having heart, and you have to be a little strong.”

Known as a tenacious defender with a high motor, Gillespie said he’s been all smiles since hearing his name called at No. 42.
“It’s been great. Getting drafted is super exciting for me, my family and my community,” Gillespie said. “I’m super grateful for that. It’s been fun meeting everybody.”

Maliq Brown
A 22-year-old forward from Duke, Brown was drafted No. 44 overall and brings a defense-first mindset.
He hopes his 7-foot-1 wingspan will help him find a way to contribute in his first NBA season.
“Just figuring out my role,” Brown said. “Just doing whatever I can to help the team in as many ways as possible, and coming in every day trying to learn as much as I can.”
