“Just how little he is and how he’s able to just play at his own pace, get to his spots,” Gillespie said of the New York Knicks’ Jalen Brunson last month at the draft combine in Chicago.
“It’s cool to see,” the 6-foot, 180-pound Gillespie said of the 6-2 Brunson, who averaged 32.6 points in the Finals. “I like watching him.”

The Spurs grabbed a pair of 22-year-old seniors in the second round of the 2026 draft Wednesday night, selecting Gillespie 42nd overall after he starred last season at Tennessee before nabbing Duke forward Maliq Brown at No. 44.
Gillespie was a First-Team All-SEC selection last season after averaging 18.4 points and 5.4 assists over 37 games. He helped the Volunteers reach the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament, where they lost 95-62 to eventual champion Michigan.

“I’m going to be a pest defensively,” Gillespie added. “And I’m always ready to shoot it, and shoot it from deep.”
Gillespie shot 36.1% from 3-point range on 5.4 attempts per game during his college career, including 40.7% on 5.9 attempts in 2024-25 with Maryland.
“I definitely feel confident in that,” he said of his perimeter shooting.
The defensive-minded Brown averaged 4.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.8 steals on his way to being named the ACC’s Defensive Player of the Year and Sixth Man of the Year.
The 6-8, 225-pound native of Culpeper, Va., helped the Blue Devils advance to the Elite Eight, where they lost 73-72 to Connecticut, which went on to face the Wolverines in the championship game.
A versatile, disruptive defender, Brown has a 7-foot-1 wingspan, which helped him win the Lefty Driesell Award as the nation’s top defensive player. He told reporters at the combine he enjoys watching Naz Reid.
“I’m not personally worried about my stats,” Brown said. “I’m just going to do whatever the coaches want me to do, whatever my teammates need from me to help our team win. Just do anything I can to stay on the court.”
The Spurs selected 18-year-old Kentucky center Jayden Quaintance with the 20th overall pick on Tuesday night before selecting 22-year-old Connecticut center Tarris Reed Jr. 26th overall after acquiring that pick from Denver by sending the Nuggets the 35th overall pick and second-round picks in 2028 and 2031.
Gillespie, who led Greeneville High to back-to-back state championships, kicked off his college career with two seasons at Belmont before playing his junior season at Maryland.
