我们必须继续保持这种势头……” pic.twitter.com/yfDrS1nUip

Inside the friendship between Carter Bryant and Victor Wembanyama

San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) hugs teammates San Antonio Spurs forward Carter Bryant (11) and San Antonio Spurs center Bismack Biyombo (18) while talking to reporters after their Game 2 win of the Western Conference semifinals at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Wednesday, May 6, 2026. The Spurs rolled past the Timberwolves 133-95 to even the series at 1-1.
Carter Bryant looks forward to every Spurs road trip.
The rookie wing enjoys seeing the country, but that’s not the main reason he’s so eager to board the team’s charter jet.
Short or long, the flights give the Los Angeles-area native a chance to spend much-valued one-on-one time with his “brother,” French superstar Victor Wembanyama.
“Me and Vic sit next to each other on the plane, so we’ve had a ton of conversations, whether that was easy conversations, hard conversations, just me checking up on him, him checking up on me,” Bryant said. "Sometimes you need a brother to lean on, somebody to hug and somebody to spill out your emotions to and your words to.
“We’ve both been there for each other. I’m super grateful for Vic.”

San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) and forward Carter Bryant (11) talk on the bench as their team takes on the Boston Celtics at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Tuesday, March 10, 2026. The Spurs defeated the Celtics 125-116.
In an improbably successful season filled with feel-good stories, the relationship between Bryant, 20, and Wembanyama, 22, ranks as one of the most positive because it bodes so well for future team chemistry.
To reach the NBA Finals together against the New York Knicks is the cherry on top of a magical season for the duo.
“Rookie year in the Finals? I don’t know how much more kid in a candy store it gets,” Bryant told NBA.com Friday at the Frost Bank Center.
The strong bond between the two was underscored by an emotional moment between them when they faced the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals at the Paycom Center.
Spurs forward Keldon Johnson, on tonight’s Game 5: “I feel like we have to put together a complete game. Every game we’ve been up double-digits. I feel like we have spurts throughout the game that show what we can do and what we’re capable of. We have to continue to feed off of… pic.twitter.com/yfDrS1nUip

Trailing 2-1 in a series they went on to win in seven games, the Spurs led by 25 points late in the third quarter when Bryant ran into Jaylin Williams on a drive to the basket that resulted in an offensive foul and a turnover. Spurs coach Mitch Johnson gave Bryant a severe tongue lashing after the miscue, leaving the youngster with a forlorn look on his face.

The scoreboard shows the San Antonio Spurs’ 133-95 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves as Victor Wembanyama, left, and Carter Bryant speak with a reporter on the court after Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio on Wednesday, May 6, 2026. The Spurs evened the series at 1-1.
Sensing Bryant needed consoling, Wembanyama put his arms on his friend’s shoulder’s before tapping him on the chest in a “shake it off, stay strong” gesture. Bryant did just that, so in Game 7, Wembanyama was caught on camera telling Bryant “I’m proud of you” while they were on the bench together.
“I’m super grateful for Vic,” Bryant said. “Vic is an A-1 human being. He’s a star on the court, but him as a human being is so much more than he could ever be on the court. And I mean that in the best way possible.”
Wembanyama’s support of Bryant in the conference finals wasn’t anything new. The unanimous NBA Defensive Player of the Year been one of Bryant’s biggest fans throughout the season.
"He’s on a learning curve, but he’s very impressive,” Wembanyama said before the playoffs started. “It’s a pleasure to watch him play because you can tell he’s super involved. And the progress he’s making, you can see it happen before our eyes. It’s great because it just makes you wonder what he can be in one (playoff) series from now. Not even talking about one year or five years from now.”
The Spurs selected Bryant 14th overall after his freshman season at Arizona. After a slow start, he cracked Johnson’s rotation because of his strong defensive play, improved 3-point shooting and his ability to play small-ball center.

San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) congratulates forward Carter Bryant (11) on a play during the second half of Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Wednesday, May 6, 2026.
All the while, Bryant formed a strong bond with Wembanyama, as well as the duo’s “uncle,” 34-year-old forward Harrison Barnes.
“Vic loves to do extracurricular activities, so he shoots me a call, shoots me a text,” Bryant said. "Usually me, him and HB, he’ll shoot us a call or a text and be like, ‘You guys want to go do something?’ And depending on the day, we’re like, “Yeah, let’s go do it.'”
And then off they go to play board games or visit places like the “World’s Quietest Room” inside Orfield Laboratories in Minneapolis during the conference semifinals against the Timberwolves.
“We’ve done a bunch of dope stuff,” Bryant said.
Bryant’s fellow rookie, 20-year-old No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper, sometimes joins in on the fun.
“I feel like we hang out outside of basketball a lot as a team, do things like team dinner or we play games as a team,” Harper said. “I feel like those kind of events and things like that make up for the years that we weren’t together or the years that we haven’t had.”
Johnson said it’s been “fun to observe” young players like Bryant, Wembanyama, Harper and guard Stephon Castle, 21, go through the NBA Finals together.

San Antonio Spurs forward Carter Bryant (11) asks teammate Victor Wembanyama (1), “You had 40?” as Wembanyama prepares for a courtside interview after the Spurs’ 139-120 win over the Dallas Mavericks at Frost Bank Center on Friday, April 10, 2026, in San Antonio.
“They share a lot with each other,” the coach said. "When you see that interaction between them, whether that’s on the court, during the heat of the game, or off the court in the locker room or when they’re just with each other off the court, you see that organic interaction.
“They’re friends, teammates, they care about each other.”
