Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama shakes off latest flagrant foul versus Knicks

San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama (1) goes up to the basket alongside New York Knicks forward Og Anunoby (8) during the fourth quarter of Game 4 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden in New York, Wednesday, June 10, 2026. The Knick defeated the Spurs 107-106, leading the series 3-1.
NEW YORK — Spurs star Victor Wembanyama indicated he will continue to play physical, aggressive basketball even after he picked up his second flagrant foul of the playoffs in the Spurs’ gut-wrenching 107-106 loss to the Knicks in Game 4 of the NBA Finals.
The infraction moved him a step closer to an automatic one-game suspension with the Spurs trailing 3-1 in the series after blowing a 29-point lead Wednesday night in an epic collapse.
Game 5 is Saturday night at the Frost Bank Center.
“Of course, I’m going to be more careful, but it’s not going to change much,” Wembanyama said after New York recorded the biggest comeback in Finals history.
Wembanyama’s latest flagrant foul came with 9:27 left in the third quarter of Game 4 when he elbowed Karl-Anthony Towns in the chin, which left the two-time All-Star just one point away from a suspension after he got hit with a flagrant-1.
Wembanyama accumulated two flagrant foul points when he elbowed Minnesota’s Naz Reid in the neck and jaw during Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinals.
The 22-year-old Frenchman was slapped with a flagrant-2 for excessive contact above the neck, which calls for an automatic ejection.
Wembanyama received a break from the NBA when it decided not to retroactively upgrade his Game 3 shove of Knicks guard Jalen Brunson to a flagrant. No foul was called on the play, and the league declined to take further action after reviewing the play.
The Knicks outscored the Spurs 55-22 after Wembanyama elbowed Towns. They shot just 6 for 35, including 2 for 15 from 3-point range after the elbow.
Wembanyama wasn’t the only player to get hit with a flagrant foul in Game 4. Knicks big man Mitchell Robinson also picked one up when he threw an elbow into Wembanyama’s chin while running up the floor late in the first quarter.
As he sat on the court after the blow, Wembanyama clapped several times, pointed a finger at his head and told Robinson, “I’m in your head.”
Spurs went from hot to cold from deep
The Spurs set an NBA Finals record with 14 3-pointers in the first half of Game 4, eclipsing the 13 Cleveland made against Golden State in Game 4 in 2017.
Seven players, including all five starters, hit at least one 3-pointer in the first half. Devin Vassell led the way by going 4 for 4. De’Aaron Fox and Dylan Harper had three each as the Spurs shot 53.8% from beyond the arc (14 of 26).
But the Spurs made just three more shots from distance in the second half on 17 attempts (17.6%), with Vassell, Fox and Harper going a combined 2 of 11. And many of those 17 attempts came early in the shot clock, which aided the Knicks as they clawed back into it.
For the game, Julian Champagnie was 1 of 7 from downtown, including 0 of 2 after halftime.
“In the first half, a lot of shots went in, a lot of tough shots went in,” Harper said. “But really that was because we were playing the right way.”
Said Fox, “We played a little slower (in the second half), but whenever we did play fast, we took quick shots. The ball wasn’t moving the same way tit did in the first half. We got great shots in the first half. We didn’t get a flow on the offensive end in the second half.”
Sochan gets props from Mike Brown
Knicks coach Mike Brown applauded former Spur Jeremy Sochan for his 41 seconds defending Wembanyama at the end of the first quarter and for his two-minute stint on the court late in the second period.
Brown called on the little-used forward after Towns got into foul trouble.
“I applaud all of them because we had different guys step up at different times,” Brown said of his players. “You take a guy like Jeremy Sochan. We threw him in the game and he gave us four to five (actually three) great minutes. I don’t even know the last time Jeremy even played longer than 30 seconds. It was just a heck of a job of keeping himself ready.”
It was the most minutes for Sochan since he logged nine in the Knicks’ series-clinching 144-114 rout of Philadelphia in the second round.
High-scoring duo makes Knicks history
Jalen Brunson, with 36, and OG Anunoby, with 33, on Wednesday became the first Knicks teammates to score 30-plus points in a Finals game.
They last time any teammates scored 33 or more in a Finals game was Kevin Durant (39) and Stephen Curry (34) in Game 5 against Cleveland in 2017.
Anunoby’s big game came after he scored 28 in the Knicks’ 115-111 loss in Game 3. Wednesday marked his seventh game of 20 or more points in the playoffs after he averaged 16.7 in the regular season.
“Regardless of what the outside world thinks of him, we know what we have in our locker room, and we have a superstar in that locker room,” Brunson said of Anunoby.
Harper hits scoring milestone
Harper is just the third player age 20 or young to score 300 points in a postseason after he finished Game 4 with 21 points on 8 of 12 from the field and 3 of 6 from deep.
The others are Jayson Tatum (351 for Boston in 2018) and Tyler Herro (335 for Miami in 2020).
