For 46 minutes and 38 seconds it looked as if the Spurs were going to even the series. In fact, for the entire first half, it looked to be a foregone conclusion. But no lead is safe in basketball. And twice now in the postseason, the Knicks have come back from over 20 point deficits to win. They took back Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals from the Cleveland Cavaliers and then swept the series. Last night they took back home court advantage just in time to send the Spurs home with their backs against the wall.

I reiterate what I said at the start. I still believe.

I believe that all four of these games could have gone either way. One missed shot. One foul call. One tipped ball goes the other way. One pass lands in possession of the intended receiver.

All four of these games were winnable by both teams. Well, the first three for sure could have gone either way. Last night’s game shouldn’t have, but the Knicks proved that any game — ANY GAME — is in play as long as you keep fighting.

The Spurs have shown the same sort of resilience throughout the season. Fighting back from 25 down against the Clippers. Wemby’s buzzer-beater against the Suns. Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals.

I am disgusted, absolutely disgusted, by the behavior of some of our fans. from the attack on Spurs fans in the streets to what transpired at the Spurs hotel, it is indefensible.

I’d like to say it’s the extreme minority, and it is. While Knicks fans seem to be hated now (previously we were laughed at, understandably so), the truth is that Knicks fans are some pretty loyal and funny people. We have had a trash organization since the 90’s (and for nearly 2 decades prior to the 90’s) and yet we still show up, still support, still lament. We are excited right now because our team is good and it has been forever. Forgive most of us our jubilation, but I don’t ask forgiveness for the hooliganism.

But these incidents are disgusting. I hope those of us who show up in San Antonio for Game 5 are the better cut of us.

I mean . . . we’re not Philadelphia fans.

By the way, I’ve always rooted for, from afar, your organization (save for when they play the Knicks, of course). Love Pop to death, always loved Manu. Your team is very talented and this series is not over, nor is the future winning they will have.

Did many people expect them to win the final two games, with game seven on the road, against OKC and their baying blue congregation?

If the Spurs can avoid a massive psychological hangover in game 5 – a giant IF – and manage to win, the Knicks are going to be under treeeeeemendous pressure in game 6. Their desperate (and in many instances despicable) fan base will be in an emotional frenzy of manic, anticipatory giddiness and simultaneous angst and dread. Every second that game – if it occurs – remains close, the tighter the collected MSG sphincters will get.

The Spurs’ calamitous second half should be, by all rights, the death knell. It was a galactic pratfall. But this team is ever-surprising, and in some ways too full of irrational self-confidence to know that teams do not recover from losses that traumatizing. Castle said it best after game 2: if they play the way they should, they should win every game. Self-evidently, they have not played the way they should and they are running out of time to do so.

But there’s a tiny chance they still might.
