Spurs bracing for more fourth quarter work against Knicks’ Jalen Bruns

New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson (11) shows some love towards fans after scoring a three point shot during the third quarter of Game 2 of the NBA Championship at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio on Friday, June 5, 2026.
NEW YORK — The Spurs did a good job forcing Knicks star Jalen Brunson to work for his points in the first two games of the NBA Finals.
But no matter how effective they were at hounding the Second-Team All-NBA guard, they just couldn’t prevent him from coming up big in crunch time, a big reason why New York holds a 2-0 lead heading into Game 3 on Monday night at Madison Square Garden.
“We’ve done a good job on him through the course of the game, but he’s made some big shots,” Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox said Sunday. “He’s been Clutch Player of the Year (in 2025), obviously. Probably the biggest reason why they’re here. But we have to continue to try to make it tough on him, and I think we’re doing a pretty good job at that. He’s played well despite that.”
The Spurs limited Brunson to 20 points on an inefficient 7 of 25 from the field, but he still managed to score two big field goals in crunch time, including a 13-foot one-legged fadeaway over Devin Vassell with 39.3 seconds left that tied the score at 104-104, and a free throw with 9.5 seconds left that accounted for the final score in the Knicks’ 105-104 triumph.
“It feels like those are the moments he lives for,” Vassell said. “I feel like we’re doing a really good job on him, making him shoot some tough shots all throughout the game. Even those clutch shots are very tough shots he’s been hitting. I don’t think there’s really much that you can change, coverages you can change. I mean, we’re forcing him into some really tough shots. So, it’s a challenge.”
“He makes big shots,” Spurs rookie guard Dylan Harper said. “That’s the type of player he is. But we can’t get too down on things like that. We got to just keep on applying the pressure.”
Brunson shot just 12 of 31 from the field in Game 1, but he scored 13 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Knicks to a 105-95 victory.
Through two games, the eighth-year pro is averaging nearly nine fourth quarter points.
“You watch him, he has some of the best footwork in the game,” said Fox, who won the inaugural Clutch Player of the Year Award in 2023. “Obviously, he’s a tough shot-maker. He can really shoot the ball. He’s not tall, but he’s strong and he knows how to get to his spots. He plays angles well.”
Castle sore ankle: Spurs guard Stephon Castle said his sore right ankle felt much better 48 hours after he was forced to leave Game 2 for about six minutes after landing awkwardly on the foot of the Knicks’ Mikal Bridges.
It’s been feeling good," Castle said. “It feels a lot better than I thought it would initially. Obviously, I had some adrenaline running, kind of once I settled down, I started to feel it. Waking up the next day, it actually felt really good.”
Castle left Game 2 with 6:45 left before returning to the court with about 30 seconds remaining.
The 2024-25 NBA Rookie of the Year is coming off a sub-par performance in Game 2 that included scoring just 14 points and dishing out only four assists against four turnovers.
Popovich’s message: Former Spurs coach Gregg Popovich spoke to the team before it flew to New York on Saturday.
“Pretty much his message was just let the last two games go. It happened,” Castle said. “They were very winnable games. We feel like we gave them those games. We got to let those go and focus on the next one.”
Popovich has given the team a few messages throughout the playoffs. He’s also spoken to or texted players on an individual basis.
But Knicks coach Mike Brown, who was an assistant under Popovich with the Spurs from 2000-2003, knows better than to ask his former boss for any advice during the Finals.
"He’s savvy,” Brown said before Game 1. “He’s very competitive. If I reached out to him and asked him for some advice, he’d give me some BS that worked against us.”
Kornet worships at landmark cathedral: Spurs center Luke Kornet and his family attended Mass on Sunday morning at one of his favorite road houses of worship, venerable St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Fifth Avenue.
“St. Patrick’s is magnificent,” Kornet, who attends Mass in San Antonio at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, said of the cathedral that opened in 1879, some 20 years after its construction began.
“We were there for Mass this morning and I’ve been there plenty of times over the years,” said Kornet, a ninth-year pro. "I love seeing it and realizing that there’s a group of people who decided to try to build this thing and that it can last for decades and decades for the faithful to go in and to worship God, frankly.
“So it’s cool to be able to be able to be part of that and to be able to witness the incredible work that a lot of people had to participate in to be able to give us this place of worship that’s been able to last for a long time.”
