GAME 2 KEYS TO VICTORY

Get Wemby better looks

One of the Spurs’ keys going into Game 1 was to get Victor Wembanyama established early. That did not happen.

The Knicks did a good job of keeping the 7-foot-4 All-Star away from the rim, and his early jumpers did not fall. He ended the first half with only eight shot attempts.

For a while, it appeared as if Wembanyama’s quiet offensive night would not matter. The Spurs took a 14-point lead in the third quarter with Wembanyama making only two field goals to that juncture.

Wembanyama never found a groove, finishing 6 of 21 for his worst shooting performance of the playoffs.

When the Spurs needed him down the stretch, Wembanyama could not find his touch. The Spurs will need to do to get the star going with paint touches from the start in Game 2.

Stick with the Brunson plan

For those only watching the points column in the box score, Jalen Brunson torched the Spurs in Game 1.

The Knicks’ All-Star guard ended with 30 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter to fuel New York’s clutch-time victory.

The Spurs made Brunson work to get there at least, going 12 of 31 from the floor. He was 7 of 22 before his blazing finish in the fourth.

Had the Spurs held on and won the game, part of the day-after narrative would have been how difficult they had made Brunson’s 30-point night.

Though the Spurs would rather Brunson not reach the 30-point threshold again, they might be OK with him taking another 31 field goals in Game 2 if it means other players are less involved.

Keep the baby, ditch the bath water

The Spurs played well enough in Game 1 to lead by double digits in the second half. They played well enough to take a one-point lead with a little more than two minutes to go.

There is no need for wholesale changes to scheme or strategy. Repairing a few very specific breakdowns will do the trick.

Late-game execution is the big one.

The Spurs ended the game with a slew of poor possessions and turnovers, which directly led to the 11-0 run the Knicks used to close out /the win.

If the Spurs find themselves in a similar situation late in Game 2, cleaner half-court sets, fewer rushed shots and some kind of go-to closing action would likely do the trick.

Out-executing the battle-hardened Knicks won’t be easy, but neither will it be impossible.
