Asked if the less-than-perfect road his team has taken to the NBA Finals is cause for any consolation now, Johnson shrugged.
“I guess it has to be,” Johnson said.
The Spurs left a Thursday film session with a laundry list of issues to clean up from Game 1.
New York bludgeoned the Spurs with 23 second-chance points, and scored 50 in the paint. Hart provided one of the more impactful three-point games in NBA postseason history, grabbing 15 rebounds with six assists and four steals in a foul-shortened 27 minutes.
The Spurs managed only 16 assists, their fewest of any game since Wembanyama arrived in 2023.
Vexed by New York’s physicality, the 7-foot-4 Wembanyama had difficulty getting to his favored spots near the rim. His tough shooting night was exacerbated by a 2-of-9 showing from 3-point range, a shot diet that played into the Knicks’ hands.
“I was bad,” Wembanyama said. “It’s not more complicated than that.”
In the aftermath of Game 1, Wembanyama received a text from the man the Spurs call “El Jefe” that confirmed as much.
