‘Spurs nuns’ step out in style with San Antonio Shoemakers

Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco on San Antonio’s West Side cheer as San Antonio Spurs center Luke Kornet (7) runs toward the court during Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio on Sunday, May 24, 2026.
The Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco are striding into the NBA finals with comfort and confidence this week thanks to a gift from San Antonio Shoemakers.
The company revealed Tuesday that the Catholic sisters received new pairs of black sneakers, which appeared to be stitched with silver thread in honor of their favorite team. The sisters’ fervor for the San Antonio Spurs has brought them nationwide attention — and free game tickets.
“Their joy, kindness and spirit have captured hearts across the country and we couldn’t be happier to see all the love they’re receiving,” San Antonio Shoemakers said in a social media post. “We’re honored to be a small part of their journey and wish them many comfortable miles ahead.”
The sisters have been cheering on the Spurs from their provincial house on the West Side since Tim Duncan’s early days with the team. Their fandom was prompted by a desire to connect with their students at St. John Bosco.
Although fans have lovingly nicknamed the group the “Spurs nuns,” the moniker isn’t exactly accurate. In the Catholic Church, nuns live private lives focused on prayer, while sisters spend their time ministering to the community.

That’s why the Salesian Sisters were able to attend game 4 of the Western Conference Finals, where they were spotted bestowing a blessing on practicing Catholic Luke Kornet before tip-off. The Spurs center is one of their favorite players, in addition to Dylan Harper and Victor Wembanyama.
In a social media post Wednesday, the sisters shared a video of students decked out in Spurs gear and light-up accessories in preparation for game 1. It’s those times when their mission “comes to life,” the sisters said.
“As we kick off Game 1 of the Finals tonight, we’re soaking in every moment together,” they wrote. “Go, Spurs Go, and God bless!”
