The San Antonio Spurs are warning season-ticket holders seeking to sell their NBA Finals seats on the secondary market not to list them on unauthorized websites and have even revoked one fan’s season tickets.
One fan, Mark Burnett, posted a screenshot to Instagram of an email from Jake Powell, another Spurs fan, warning supporters to be careful about where they post their finals tickets for resale. Powell’s season tickets were revoked after the Spurs identified the ticket sales as originating from an unofficial secondary market site that violates the team’s ticketing terms and conditions.
“We’re focused on getting authentic tickets into the hands of our fans and strongly encourage fans to only buy from verified marketplaces,” the Spurs said in a statement to The Athletic. “Our resale guidelines have been communicated to our members throughout the season and in conjunction with Playoffs and Finals going on sale.”
The news comes amid soaring ticket prices as the NBA Finals tip off Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. ET at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio. The Spurs venue seats 18,418, and the venue’s third-party operator, Ticketmaster, is selling resale tickets. As of Tuesday, the cheapest ticket is $793.73 before fees in the balcony level in the 200s section. One of the best seats is on the floor in the Ledger Courtside Club and is marked $47,600 before fees.
Burnett told The Athletic that Powell used a Facebook ticket group when seeking to sell his ticket. Burnett added that he knows of at least three others who’ve had their season tickets revoked. Burnett also claims the Spurs are holding and releasing small blocks of 200-300 seats at a time.
“I’ve been monitoring the pricing and site. I believe it has to do with the ability to control the market pricing because Ticketmaster uses dynamic pricing while raising pricing due to demand,” Burnett said.
Burnett, a former Spurs season-ticket holder for 13 seasons, said a team ticketing representative told him the Spurs routinely monitor social media pages and season ticket holders’ accounts to see if they are selling their seats and for how much.
“The Spurs have always had policies and regulations regarding ticket resale,” Burnett said. “However, they’ve really never been enforced until this postseason.”
The Knicks are in the finals for the first time since 1999 and are hoping to win their first title in 53 years. The Spurs were last in the finals in 2014, when they beat the Miami Heat to earn their fifth title.
