OKLAHOMA CITY — Spurs associate head coach Sean Sweeney, who was expected to be one of the most sought-after names on the NBA coaching market this offseason, has agreed in principle to become the head coach in Orlando, league sources say.
Sweeney, 41, will replace Jamahl Mosley, who was fired after the Magic’s Game 7 loss against Detroit in the first round of the playoffs last month.
Hired away from Dallas last summer, Sweeney has been widely applauded for designing a Spurs defense that ranked third in the NBA during the regular season, up from 25th in 2024-25.
That defense has only become more ferocious in the playoffs, holding an opponent to fewer than 100 points seven times, including Thursday’s 118-91 victory over Oklahoma City in Game 6 of the Western Conference finals. The Spurs are 7-0 in those games.
Asked earlier this postseason how much credit he gives Sweeney for the Spurs’ defensive dominance, star Victor Wembanyama was succinct.
“All of it,” he said.
Sweeney is expected to remain with the Spurs throughout the remainder of the playoffs. They face the Thunder in a do-or-die Game 7 on Saturday in Oklahoma City.
