pic.twitter.com/bSded5rcDg

OKLAHOMA CITY — Dan Weiss was thrilled when the Spurs picked him last summer to succeed Bill Schoening as their radio play-by-play announcer.

“It’s a dream come true, right?” he said.

But the job isn’t without its pressures.

As only the sixth radio voice in franchise history and successor to a man, Bill Schoening, who filled the role for 24 years and covered four NBA championship runs, Weiss feels the weight of history whenever he gets behind the microphone.

“You come into a position that’s been held by someone of such great esteem as Bill Schoening, who did it with such class and excellence for the last 20-plus years, so you’re trying to maintain the standard of excellence,” said Weiss, who added he was well aware of how few people have called games for the Spurs, a list that includes Terry Stembridge, who broadcast 1,252 consecutive Dallas Chaparrals/Spurs games and had the gig for 15 years.

The voices in the span between Stembridge and Schoening, who called 2,280 games in a row, included that of Jay Howard, who broadcast the team’s first NBA title in 1999.

Spurs’ Keldon Johnson ahead of Game 5: "This is the biggest game of the season, right here tonight. … It’s going to be a dog fight. It’s going to be tough. But I feel like we’re built for the moment, we’re built for these times, and I feel like we’ll show it tonight.” pic.twitter.com/bSded5rcDg

“It’s a high bar,” Weiss, 46, said of his predecessors’ work. “And so the first thing is you want to match the level and the standard that’s been set, but then at the same time, you’re also putting your own imprint and your own stance on it as well.”

That’s where his lifelong love of numbers comes in.

When the native of Weston, Mass., and graduate of Northeastern University started working on the Spurs TV broadcasts in the late 2010s, he searched for a way to put his mark on the show while complementing the work of former Spurs sharpshooter Matt Bonner when they were paired in the studio as analysts.

“My initial thought was, well, Matt Bonner’s won NBA championships, he’s an elite NBA player,” Weiss said. "He could actually speak to the nuances of the game. The extent of my basketball career was high school basketball, so that kind of takes a little bit of my credibility away for going out and talking about what’s happening out on the floor during an NBA game.

“So I kind of had to find my own, I guess, niche was the way to put it. How am I going to add my two cents to this broadcast but make it seem like I know what I’m talking about? That’s kind of how ‘Danalytics’ were born. I was basically able to match my love of numbers for the game. Our producer at the studio kind of came up with the term ‘Danalystics’ and it kind of took off.”

Spurs TV announcers Bill Land, front, and Dan Weiss work from the broadcast team’s mobile broadcast set-up at the AT&T Center in February 2022.

As he sprinkles his statistical nuggets into his broadcasts, he shares them on social media via X (formerly Twitter) at @DanWeissPBP with the hashtag, #danalytics.

During the Spurs’ 103-82 pounding of Oklahoma City in Game 4 of the Western Conference finals, Weiss tossed out several intriguing stats, including one that illustrated early on just how well the Spurs were playing defensively against two-time league MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander: “Spurs up 31-26 after 12 minutes. SGA goes scoreless for only the 6th time in a quarter this season. Only the 2nd scoreless quarter in which he’s played 8+ minutes since Nov. 2021.”

He also noted “10 assists on 10 field goals for the Spurs in that first quarter. Fourth time this season with a 100% assist rate in a quarter.”

After the game, Weiss tweeted the Spurs played “at a pace of 101.5 possessions/48 minutes, fastest of the series. 7-1 in these playoffs when playing faster than 98 possessions.”

Weiss also offers historical tidbits, which help put Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama’s greatness into perspective.

“Victor Wembanyama is the 2nd youngest player with a 30-point, 20-rebound playoff game behind Moses Malone who did it twice,” Weiss tweeted in reference to a former ABA/NBA star after the 22-year-old Frenchman’s 41-point, 24-rebound effort in the Spurs’ 122-115 double-overtime victory in Game 1.

It’s good stuff that others in the media appreciate.

“I grew up listening to baseball and basketball games on the radio, so I always enjoyed statistical analysis, and Dan brings that back for me with Danalytics,” said longtime San Antonio sports reporter Raul Dominguez, who covers the Spurs as a correspondent for The Associated Press. “At times it’s a routine statistic or fact, but more often Dan has a deeper dive into history or some unexpected fact. The nerd in me devours those posts because it enhances the game and shows Dan’s love for preserving history.”

Longtime WOAI-TV sports anchor Don Harris called Weiss’ love for numbers informative and entertaining.

“I always take analytics with a grain of salt. Meaning numbers don’t always tell the full story, but often they do. Dan makes it fun,” Harris said. “The other night I was listening and he told us what uniforms the Spurs were going to be in that night and he had a full breakdown of the Spurs’ win-loss record while wearing those jerseys both in the regular season and in the playoffs. How he knows that I have no idea, but they won 62 games so they won a lot in every uniform. Does the uniform matter? He at least made me think about it.”

Weiss is happy Danalytics has become a resource for some of his peers.

“We’re all on the same team,” he said. “We’re all in the business of trying to make each other better because we all want to produce the best product that’s out there.”

Weiss joined the Spurs organization in 2009 as the play-by-play voice of the San Antonio Rampage hockey team, a role he held until 2018. During that period, he also helped out with broadcasts for the G League Austin Spurs and the WNBA San Antonio Stars.

No matter his role, he always brings a high level of professionalism to his work.

“I’m always of the mind that I really have to paint a picture for the listeners, so I think like any radio guy would say, it’s about being overly prepared, giving additional detail, kind of never missing a moment,” he said.

Despite the late nights and intense travel demands of the job, Weiss strives to balance his work with his family life. He and his wife Lauren will celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary in July and have two children, Emily, 12, and Ethan, 10.

“As the kids have gotten older and they do more activities and sports, you try to find whatever time you can to take a couple of hours to go to an event or a game or whatever it may be,” he said. “That’s important. Work-life (balance) is something that’s always talked about, but there’s definitely more of an emphasis in our generation on wanting to be as much a part of our family’s lives as we can during the course of the season.”

And what a season it’s been for the NBA rookie play-by-play man.

“The team makes it so easy,” Weiss said. “Winning 62 games and getting to the Western Conference finals, you’re just kind of sitting back and enjoying the ride.”
