Who Is James Goldstein? Meet the rich NBA superfan at every Spurs game

Goldstein says he’s been attending NBA games for over 70 years, starting with his hometown team, the Milwaukee Hawks.
If you’ve been keeping up with the Spurs NBA playoff run, you’ve probably become accustomed to seeing a few familiar faces on the court, including those of legends like Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili.
But what about one figure who keeps popping up courtside, with a particularly flamboyant flair for fashion?
No, you’re not just imagining a charisma-drenched, ultra-wealthy NBA superfan who can always afford floor seats at every Spurs playoff game. You’re actually seeing one — and his name is James Goldstein, 86.
So, who exactly is Goldstein, and why does he seem to be at every Spurs game? According to a May 2024 report from veteran sports reporter Dwain Price, Goldstein’s love for basketball extends well beyond the Spurs. In fact, Price calls Goldstein nothing short of a “basketball junkie,” dubbing him “the NBA’s coolest and most well-connected fan.”
According to the report, he’s been attending NBA games for over 70 years, starting with his hometown team. "At the age of 15 in 1955, I had a non-paying job as the statistician for the TV announcer of the Milwaukee Hawks,” Goldstein said. “I have been hooked on the NBA ever since.”

Goldstein says he’s been attending NBA games for over 70 years, starting with his hometown team, the Milwaukee Hawks.
Now, as a Los Angeles-based jet-setter with thousands of NBA games under his bedazzled belt, he’s carved out a fan network of his own. “In Oklahoma, they make me feel like I’m the world’s biggest celebrity,” Goldstein said. “I get photo requests that are non-stop … In LA also, after the game, people ask me for photos. But not like Oklahoma.”
Even after all these years, Goldstein says he still purchases his own tickets to each game, with “different methods in each city.” He’s able to nab tickets about 99% of the time, funding his excursions through his successful — and controversially litigious — real estate dealings, with publications like the Hollywood Reporter revealing that he spends approximately $500,000 on seats each season.
“I’ve got different methods in each city,” Goldstein said, noting how he always aims for mid-court floor seats. “Occasionally … in the playoffs when it gets to the conference finals or the NBA Finals, I have to settle for something else.”
For now, the ultra-wealthy NBA superfan can still be spotted admiring Victor Wembanyama’s aura from the sidelines.
