OKLAHOMA CITY — Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox was a late scratch from Game 1 of the Western Conference finals on Monday in Oklahoma City due to right ankle soreness, the team announced half an hour before tipoff.
The club is hopeful the All-Star guard will be fit to return for Game 2.
In Fox’s place, the Spurs will give 20-year-old rookie Dylan Harper his first NBA playoff start.
Fox initially suffered his injury in Game 4 of the Spurs’ conference semifinal series against Minnesota, when Timberwolves guard Ayo Dosunmu dove into his legs while chasing a loose ball.
The 28-year-old Fox played through the injury in Game 5, scoring 18 points, five assists and four rebounds of the 126-97 victory.
The ankle injury resurfaced in Game 6 on Friday when the All-Star guard was forced to head to the locker room late in the first half for treatment. He returned for the start of the second half and finished with 21 points, nine assists and four rebounds in 24 minutes.
Asked about the injury before Fox’s status for Game 1 became official, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson Johnson said the injury is likely to be an issue through the Spurs’ postseason run.
“It’s not going away for as long as we’re playing, I believe,” Johnson said.
The Spurs got better news on the injury front when it comes to backup center Luke Kornet, who had been listed as questionable with left foot soreness.
Kornet will be available to face the Thunder on Monday, the team announced
