NBA reacts to Victor Wembanyama ejection vs Timberwolves

San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) fights for a rebound with Minnesota Timberwolves forward Jaden McDaniels (3) before getting called for a flagrant foul by throwing an elbow to the face of Minnesota Timberwolves center Naz Reid (11), not pictured, leading to Wembanyama’s ejection in the 2nd quarter of Game 4.

The debate surrounding Victor Wembanyama’s Game 4 ejection reached sports talk shows, podcasts and even current and former NBA stars Monday — and now the San Antonio Spurs center has officially avoided further punishment and will play in Tuesday night’s critical Game 5 against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Wembanyama will not be suspended after receiving a flagrant 2 foul Sunday night for elbowing Naz Reid while fighting for a rebound.

The foul led to the first ejection of Wembanyama’s career during Minnesota’s 114-109 Game 4 win, which tied the Western Conference semifinal series 2-2.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson defended Wembanyama afterward, saying, “There was zero intent.”

The Peacock broadcast also showed Wembanyama asking teammate Harrison Barnes what a flagrant 2 meant before realizing he had been ejected.

ESPN analysts split over Wembanyama’s actions

The incident quickly became one of the NBA’s biggest talking points Monday, with ESPN analysts debating whether Wembanyama crossed the line or responded to escalating playoff physicality.

On ESPN’s “First Take,” former NBA player Jay Williams defended the emotional reaction from Wembanyama.

“I’m not condoning Wemby’s actions,” Williams said. “But at some point, when you get pushed around all the time, and you get punked, you’re going to stand up for yourself.”

Former NBA center Kendrick Perkins disagreed, saying the physicality Wembanyama is facing is simply part of playoff basketball.

“You’re 7-7,” Perkins said. “You don’t think that you’re not going to get hit?”

Wemby is 7-foot-4.

Meanwhile, Stephen A. Smith argued the play deserved not only the ejection but potentially a suspension as well before the league’s decision became known Monday.

“The play itself warrants not just an ejection, but a suspension for Game 5,” Smith said.

ESPN NBA insider Brian Windhorst also criticized the play, calling it “absolutely unacceptable.”

“This was a very immature act by a player who took himself out of a game,” Windhorst said.

Former NBA players debate whether play was ‘dirty’

Former NBA players Chandler Parsons and Lou Williams both agreed the elbow deserved a Flagrant 2 and called it a dirty play.

“I don’t like how he kind of looks back, sees him, and then throws an obvious elbow,” Parsons said. “This was dirty, man.”

Williams agreed and said Wembanyama has to remain composed in critical playoff moments.

“It was a dirty play,” Williams said. “He got to be able to control his emotions more, especially in a pivotal game.”

Williams also argued the Spurs lost their defensive identity after Wembanyama exited, saying his ejection cost them the game.

Former NBA champion Paul Pierce offered a different perspective, arguing that today’s NBA overreacts to physical playoff moments.

“In my day, that’s just an offensive foul and we move on,” Pierce said. “Today, everybody’s so soft.”

Pierce said officials should have issued a Flagrant 1 instead of ejecting Wembanyama.

“Let’s play our best versus your best,” Pierce said. “Let’s not let the refs dictate the series.”

Draymond Green, Dwight Howard react on X

Even current and former NBA stars chimed in on social media as the debate over Wembanyama’s ejection spread across the league.

Golden State Warriors forward and four-time NBA champion Draymond Green quote-tweeted a post on X that asked, “If this was @Money23Green how many games would we be asking for?”

Green responded by suggesting he would have faced far harsher backlash for a similar incident.

“Y’all have called for my career for less,” Green wrote.

Former NBA champion Dwight Howard also joked about the incident on X, comparing Wembanyama’s elbow to the physical style older NBA big men used throughout his career.

“Wemby watch film on how the shaqs, the KG’s the Me’s threw them elbows it’s an art,” Howard wrote, referencing himself and Hall of Famers Shaquille O’Neal and Kevin Garnett.

The Timberwolves’ 114-109 victory evened the Western Conference semifinal series 2-2 heading into Tuesday night’s Game 5 in San Antonio at the Frost Bank Center.
