-In slow-mo it looks like he looks at Reid before swinging. Watch it in real time, he most likely felt contact but didn’t aim and swing with the intention of hitting Reid. Curious if the NBA seesintent differently in real time.

-I still content the swing was Flagrant 2 due to Wemby’s height. The impact would land on Reid’s chest by almost any other player. Neck/head is dangerous, but was his real intention to hit Reid, or to get lose from an illegal hold and his natural arm motion just happens to be head level with your average NBA player. (If I was holding Wemby, his swing would miss my head entirely and have been a no call.)
-Unrelated to Wemby but pertinent to aggressiveness: In order for both Anthony Edwards and Julius Randle to score at the frequency to earn the win, they stiff arm/push off the defender, which should technically be an offensive foul. What criteria are the officals using to dertermine who gets called and who doesn’t? Honestly, the parity in pushing off between Anthony Edwards and Stephon Castle is the difference between a win and and loss last night.

As a Spurs fan, I’m really saddened and confused about all the physicality allowed to inflict on Wemby and Castle without the Referees calling a foul. As fans, we need more transparency from the officials and the league of what’s going on. We deserved that.

the officiating in the first half was the worst i’ve seen this season that i can recall. it was enough to invite conspiracy thoeries about it, especially considering that the nba has employed corrupt referees in the past.

Imo this was the equivalent of Jokic knocking the Morris brother on his butt. Horrible timing, but the message needed to be sent that hes not going to just take getting mauled forever.
No way he gets suspended. He has no history of flagrants or technicals, and he only played 12 minutes which according to the NBA’s own standards wouldn’t even qualify as a fully played game. He was justly ejected, and game 4 was basically his suspension.

This is all on the refs and the NBA and this should be voided as its due to their negligence. The refs create the culture of the game based on what they allow, and they have allowed the same kind of defense my brother plays on me when I have 19 points in a game of 21.

I remember back when the Spurs would play the OKC Thunder in the playoffs and how the Thunder absolutely “flooded the zone” by fouling every Spurs player on the court every play - grabbing, pushing, elbows, you name it - way beyond “physical basketball.” I couldn’t believe how they got away with it at the time. But the way the Wolves have been playing is even worse. So flagrant the way they are just beating on the Spurs every play right in front of the refs. Yet the refs call the Spurs for absolute ticky-tack fouls. And it’s been that way every game, even on the Spurs home court. Castle just gets bludgeoned constantly, yet he gets called for nothing burgers on D. Carter Bryant gets called for fouls just by being on the court. Vic is getting hammered, arms pulled into awkward positions, shirt pulled, elbows flying into his torso constantly, bodies pushing him on every foray into the lane when he leaves the ground, hit in the head constantly, and hardly ever gets a call. I can’t blame him for being incredibly frustrated. Especially given how much he wants to win. Even the most patient of humans can only stomach so much injustice before they need to do something about it.

There’s no real excusing what Wemby did, but as the NBA considers whether to (ludicrously) suspend him for another game, I hope they’ll pay attention to the fact that he was fouled five times on that play alone.

The important result from this incident might be the message being sent to the next set of referees. They have been graphically put on notice that Wemby will react under unfair conditions. I believe the refs will now be aware of that, and will more consciously try to stop him from being turned into a pinata.

I agree with both Stephen A. and with Mitch. The ejection was about the most obvious thing in the world for anyone not wearing Spurs-colored glasses; AND the officials allow a ridiculous amount of contact for Wembanyama, on the (unstated but apparent) belief that he can’t be defended within the rules.

It’s not fair, but previous aliens like Wilt and Shaq faced the same thing – and if O’Neal, as a Laker with Phil Jackson as his coach, could get routinely manhandled without getting fouled, Wemby playing in San Antonio with Mitch Johnson as his coach is certainly not going to fare better.

The best revenge is to go out and dominate, which you can’t do from the bench. Wemby is going to have to learn to live with it.

When the Wemby elbow is grounds for ejection but the shoulder 1st dive into Foxes legs aren’t even considered for a 2nd look, how can there not be more going on than meets the eye? The league is letting the game turn into rugby, including the tackling. The perimeter defense on Castle isn’t even relative to past NBA skills. Players getting shoved around is nothing new, but hand checking is not what we’re seeing. Grabbing jerseys, grabbing arms and pushing under the basket are not elite skills.

My opinions have no bearing on game outcomes or league decision, but as an invested fan, I want to process and share the results of my processing. It is impossible to fully separate my fandom biases, nor do I expect my fellow Pounders to agree with me. Having said all that:

1. By virtue of where contact occurred, it was a flagrant foul. Had Wemby been a regular 7 foot center, contact occurs on the shoulders or chest and maybe it is not even called a flagrant. But he is, and it was. He will have to adjust. It is not fair, but then everyone else in the league probably thinks it is unfair that he is so inhumanly tall and athletic.

2. (This is probably the most controversial take) Flagrant 1 was the more appropriate call. I am assuming that the refs used slow motion as part of their review. Slow motion is a horrible tool for determining intentionality, since it creates a false sense of premeditation by stretching out the time between cause and effect. Wemby’s arms were cradling the ball to protect it from being stolen. He had nowhere to move. Swinging around at shoulder height was instinctive, reactive, and his only available move in that moment. His only “intention” appeared to be protecting the ball and breaking free.

3. The refs created the conditions for this sequence of events by failing to do their jobs earlier in the series. They also should have blown that play dead when the wolves fouled Wemby - before the swing happened. Athletes are competitors and will fill whatever physicality vacuum the refs allow.

4. The league office is failing to monitor the refs properly. I have no insider information on this. What I suspect is that there is an overreliance upon quantitative metrics, like total team fouls over a game/series, rather than using qualitative metrics. Looking at data points creates a false sense of objectivity when the data points are subjectively determined. For example, equal team fouls called over the course of a series is not the same as equal physicality being allowed. It is much harder to enforce equal physicality, and human individuals and organizations tend to gravitate towards the paths of least resistance.

The league needs to do better.
The refs need to do better.
And Wemby will need to adjust.

It can be a difficult balancing act between our love of playing the “Spurs Way,” and Vic’s action last night (decidedly not the Spurs Way). Throwing the elbow was wrong, we all seem to know that. But so many are acting like it happened in a vacuum. He’s a very young, hypercompetitive man, who has been on the receiving end of a constant mauling by another team. He sees that the refs aren’t protecting him. He sees that the refs are protecting the other team’s players. Over the course of hours of play. It had become way past getting out of hand. The injustice is disgusting. Someone can only take so much. Especially someone with a sense of justice. His action was wrong, but understandable. At least to me.

Haiku are always this length
But I play for the Minnesota Timberwolves
The refs are letting me express myself more
So I will do what any competitive athlete does
And press the limits of what is allowed
Until someone pushes back and elbows fly
Then they get ejected, not my problem
Celebrate the close win at home
League yawns and does nothing
