Martinez’s curated cut style is characterized by cleanly defined lines, smooth gradient fades and flourished loops.

Spurs spirit has such deep roots in San Antonio and beyond that it’s growing out of people’s heads.

At least, that’s the idea behind one Boerne-area barber shop’s latest series of creations: Spurs-themed haircuts designed to help fans wear the team’s playoff success loud and proud.

“It all started 'cause we were Spurs fans you know?” Buena Gente Barbershop owner Angel Aguilar said Friday. “We got together and all just started talking about it. We said, ‘Hey, we should try this out,’” he added, noting they first started rolling out the custom cuts during Fiesta season.

Of course, that’s when the team that has the city buzzing nabbed a jab at the NBA playoffs for the first time in seven years. “We knew what season it was. We knew how excited people are. We’re all Spurs fans here,” Aguilar said. “We started doing them, and they just took off.”

The man behind the coveted designs, 38-year-old Rene Martinez — otherwise known as RJ the Barber — has been cutting hair since he was in middle school.

“I don’t really plan the designs out ahead of time,” Martinez said Friday. “Basically, I just go with the flow and work with whatever’s in my head. I see an idea in my mind and I just sort of copy-and-paste it onto the customer.”

“I’ve been doing this for a long time, since about sixth or seventh grade,” he said, noting that he got his first pair of hair clippers at a local Walmart. “I went to Davis Middle School on the East Side. The (haircut) designs were big back then. I started cutting my friend’s hair, and I’ve just been cutting hair ever since … 20-something years already.”

The experience shows: Martinez’s style is characterized by cleanly defined lines, smooth gradient fades and flourishing loops. “I don’t really plan the designs out ahead of time,” he said. “Basically, I just go with the flow and work with whatever’s in my head. I see an idea in my mind and I just sort of copy-and-paste it onto the customer.”

Martinez has been booked and busy during the team’s 2026 playoff run, with more and more clients coming in to request a custom Spurs-themed cut. He charges $35 for a regular cut and $50 for a design, or $80 for both.

If you’d like to schedule an appointment with Martinez at Buena Gente Barbershop, at 1018 N. Main St. in Boerne, you can reach out to him on Instagram at @rjskuts, or contact the barbershop at (830) 331-4777.
