pic.twitter.com/SZodJ2W9Jh

Stephon Castle sends physical message to Timberwolves’ Bones Hyland

San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle (5) before Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Wednesday, May 6, 2026.
Add Minnesota’s Bones Hyland to the list of players Spurs guard Stephon Castle has had to get in line during the playoffs.
In the first round series against Portland, the 2024-25 NBA Rookie of the Year had a dustup with All-Star Deni Avdija. This time around, it was Hyland who was on the receiving end of a physical message sent by Castle.
A brief altercation between the guards occurred with under six minutes left in the third quarter as they jostled for position while the Spurs’ Keldon Johnson and the Timberwolves’ Naz Reid squared off for a jump ball. Tired of Hyland’s clutching and grabbing, Castle shoved him away. Hyland responded by shoving Castle back before players from both teams intervened.
After a review, crew chief Scott Foster assessed Castle with a common foul and Hyland with a technical foul that resulted in Devin Vassell sinking a free throw for a 76-51 lead with 5:42 left in the period.
Stephon Castle on his tussle with Bones Hyland: “I didn’t get a tech, so I think I did enough to send a message. I don’t think there’s anything soft about our team, so when they try to do stuff like that on the court, if we don’t respond, it feels like they’re trying to punk us.” pic.twitter.com/SZodJ2W9Jh

Castle indicated shoving Hyland was worth his trouble.
“I didn’t get a tech, so I think I did enough to send a message,” he said. “I don’t think there’s anything soft about our team. So when they try and do stuff like that on the court, if we don’t respond, it feels like they’re trying to punk us.”
Castle’s actions were also in keeping with the Spurs’ determination to be more aggressive and physical after they got pushed around in Game 1.
“I think our aggressiveness was right where we wanted it to be,” said Castle, who led the Spurs with 21 points. “We felt like in Game 1 they got to their actions a little too easy and they were very comfortable offensively.”
Bryant returns from injury: Spurs rookie forward Carter Bryant returned after missing Game 1 with a sprained right foot.
The 14th overall pick of the 2025 NBA Draft finished with two points, two rebounds and two assists in 16 minutes on Wednesday night. His lone field goal came on a forceful slam set up by De’Aaron Fox midway through the second quarter.
“Carter gave us energy,” Vassell said.
The Timberwolves welcomed back guard Ayo Dosunmu, who missed Game 1 against the Spurs and Game 6 against Denver with a calf injury.
The fifth-year pro failed to score, going 0 for 4 from the floor in 10 minutes, but had one block and one steal in 10 minutes.
Dosunmo left the game early with right heel pain.
