Ex-NBA player: Series over after Spurs-Timberwolves Game 1

Former NBA player and analyst Gilbert Arenas piled onto growing national criticism of the San Antonio Spurs Tuesday afternoon, hours after ESPN analyst Kendrick Perkins suggested on “First Take” that the playoff series may already be over following San Antonio’s 104-102 Game 1 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Speaking on his YouTube show “Gil’s Arena,” Arenas delivered a blunt assessment of the Spurs’ chances moving forward.

“This series is over,” Arenas said. “There was nothing the Spurs did that showed anything that can beat the Wolves in a series.”

Earlier Tuesday morning, Perkins echoed Arenas: He, too, believes the series is over after one game.

Arenas spent much of the discussion focused on Victor Wembanyama, who finished Game 1 with 11 points, 15 rebounds and 12 blocks. While Wembanyama’s block total set a playoff record, Arenas argued it still was not one of his best overall performances.

He specifically questioned Wembanyama’s offensive decision-making against smaller defenders and warned foul trouble could become a major issue as the series continues.

“When you have a guard on you, you have an offensive book. When you have a big on you, you have an offensive book,” Arenas said. “So the fact that they can stick a shooting guard or a small forward on you, and you still don’t know what you’re doing, that is not acceptable in the playoffs.”

Arenas also pointed to Minnesota’s playoff-tested roster as a major difference between the teams. He highlighted players such as Anthony Edwards, Rudy Gobert, Naz Reid and Julius Randle while comparing them to San Antonio’s younger core.

“The Wolves have a game plan that I don’t think Spurs is ready for,” Arenas said.

One of Arenas’ biggest concerns centered on late-game defensive matchups. He predicted Minnesota could force Wembanyama away from the basket defensively by using floor-spacing lineups featuring Reid or Randle at center, creating driving lanes for Edwards.

“When he has to guard one of those guys, Ant Man is getting downhill,” Arenas said. “He can’t protect the basket with the two bigs shooting threes.”

Despite the criticism, Arenas repeatedly emphasized that San Antonio’s issues appear rooted more in youth and playoff inexperience than lack of talent.

“It just seems very young when you watch the game,” he said.

Game 2 between San Antonio and Minnesota is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Frost Bank Center.
