“It’s the community,” Bowen said of San Antonio’s dedicated fan base. “When you are a part of something that’s truly special … we are fortunate.”

Two San Antonio Spurs legends made an appearance at the Frost Bank Center ahead of the team’s Game 2 matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday night.

The event stemmed from a partnership between the Spurs and USAA to provide game tickets and a special “chalk talk” meet-and-greet with Sean Elliott and Bruce Bowen for 50 U.S. service members stationed in San Antonio, according to a Wednesday news release.

During the meet-and-greet at the Frost Bank Center’s La Gloria outpost, rows of fans decked out in Spurs gear listened as Sean Elliott and Bruce Bowen reflected on their NBA championship experiences. Elliott won one title with San Antonio, while Bowen helped capture three.

Service members stationed in San Antonio were gifted with tickets and a special meet-and-greet event with Bowen and Elliot ahead of the Spurs face off against the Timberwolves.

They highlighted how former coach Gregg Popovich’s dedication to the fundamentals — and to staying humble — helped the team “fly under the radar” through multiple title wins.

“Others, looking from the outside in, they’ll say things like, ‘oh they’re boring,’” Bowen said. “(But) we don’t need to beat our chest when we make the layup because, you know what? You’re supposed to make the layup,” he added through laughter.

The two also highlighted how the city’s family-forward culture has provided a unique support system for the team for decades. “San Antonio is a really special place,” Elliot said. “When you make people feel like they’re family, you make everybody feel like they’re a part of it.”
