The Spurs emerged from a film session Wednesday morning determined to be the aggressors when they host Minnesota in Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals.

San Antonio is trying to avoid falling into a dangerous 0-2 hole in the best-of-seven series after it fell 104-102 in Game 1 on Monday night.

Game 2 is set for 8:30 p.m. Wednesday and will be aired on ESPN.

“We got to be more physical,” Spurs forward Devin Vassell told reporters. “Got to initiate contact more. And just trust what got us here. I don’t think anybody’s questioning the shots that anybody took or anyone’s confidence. We’re all good.”

The Spurs dropped Monday night’s game after Julian Champagnie missed an open 26-foot side-step 3-pointer at the buzzer. Vassell defended coach Mitch Johnson’s decision not to call a timeout prior to the shot to get the ball into the hands of Victor Wembanyama, De’Aaron Fox or perhaps even Vassell.

The Spurs had gained possession with 6.2 seconds left when Dylan Harper rebounded a miss by Julius Randle.

The Spurs fell 104-102 to the Timberwolves.

“Calling a timeout, they might be able to set up their defense,” Vassell said. "We don’t know what type of look we’re going to be able to get. So we’re playing fast, we’re playing to attack. And Ju got a great shot. So everybody wants Ju to shoot that shot. We all want Ju to shoot that shot. And if it happens again, we want him to shoot that shot. We know he’s going to make that shot. You call a timeout in that situation, you don’t know what type of shot you get after that.

“I’ve heard both sides, but at the end of the day, we all trust Ju and we trust Mitch on what he wanted to do.”

Vassell also addressed the claim by Minnesota coach Chris Finch that Wembanyama got away with four or maybe even five goaltends on his way to recording an NBA playoff record 12 blocks in Game 1.

“There’s always going to be something,” Vassell said. “They always going to have something to say. I guarantee you Vic’s going to keep blocking shots and they’re going to have something to say.”
