Spurs’ Luke Kornet opens up about not shooting 3s anymore

Don’t bank on Spurs center Luke Kornet becoming a stretch five anytime soon.

In the Spurs’ 120-108 win over Portland last week in Game 2 of the first round of the playoffs, Kornet hit his first 3-pointer since April 9, 2024 when he was with Boston, making him the first player since Josh Powell in 2009 to sink a shot from beyond the arc in the playoffs after finishing the regular season without attempting one.

It was a throwback to the days early in his career when he spread the floor. Over his first four seasons while playing for New York, Chicago and Boston, he shot 32.8% from 3-point range on 3.3 attempts per game.

But Kornet indicated after practice Thursday that his shot from deep against the Blazers was an anomaly and not the beginning of a trend, that he will continue to get most of his points by screening and rolling to the basket, leaving Victor Wembanyama and others to stretch the floor.

“I’ve always wanted to be, and it hurts me that I’m not anymore (a 3-point shooter), but my ultimate job is to help my team more than it is to get what I want out of it,” Kornet said. “And so I’ve kind of had to come to accept that. I miss launching threes a lot, but you’re ultimately there to help your team win. So I’ve kind of had to put that aside (shooting 3s) or put it in its place.”

Kornet said the timing was right for him to attempt one against the Trail Blazers.

“I’ve haven’t been sworn off of taking them as much as it is I’m going to try to put myself in positions to help us succeed and win and do what I think is best,” he said. “And the situation, the possession just worked out that way, how they were guarding and all that type of stuff to where I felt like that opportunity was just the right one then.”

Kornet celebrated his rare 3 by mimicking a seafarer using a telescope.

“It was like an explorer, Jack Sparrow type of thing,” he said. “It was like expanding it out and then, yeah, looking.”
