pic.twitter.com/kQe5QD2RG1

— Spurs Nation (@ Spurs_Nation) April 25, 2026

pic.twitter.com/7H4NLVZvnN

3 Takeaways Spurs win Game 3 Trail Blazers without Victor Wembanyama

San Antonio Spurs guard Dylan Harper (2) plays in the during the third quarter of Game 3 of a first-round NBA playoff series against the Portland Trail Blazers at Moda Center in Portland, Friday, April 24, 2026. The Spurs defeated the Trail Blazers 120-108.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Early Friday morning, while Victor Wembanyama’s availability for the biggest game of the Spurs’ season was still officially a question mark, rookie guard Dylan Harper tried to stay optimistic.

Maybe Wembanyama would not pass concussion protocol in time to be cleared for Game 3 at Portland. Maybe he would.

Either way, Harper vowed to be ready.

“Obviously we hope he plays,” Harper said. “If there’s a world where he doesn’t play, it’s just the next man up.”

Stephon Castle scored 33 points and Harper had a season high 27 to go with 10 rebounds as the Spurs overcame a 15-point deficit in the third quarter to regain home-court advantage.

That the Spurs won without Wembanyama – who suffered a concussion in the second quarter of their Game 2 defeat Tuesday – made it all the sweeter.

“I think we worked the game,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “We just stayed with it.”

Wembanyama was considered questionable for most of the day Friday as he worked through the NBA’s concussion protocol.

He was eventually ruled out about an hour before tipoff.

With their All-Star center on the bench in a technicolor sweater, the Spurs pulled off a victory for the ages.

Harper was at the center of the Spurs’ rally, scoring a dozen of his points in the third quarter. He came one basket shy of matching Tony Parker for the most points scored by a 20-year-old in Spurs playoff history.

Parker posted 29 points on two separate occasions during the 2003 postseason.

“When I came in the game, my biggest focus was just not trying to get it all at once and just try to be that energy guy that came in and played hard,” Harper said. “Once I started doing that, I think the game kind of just opened up.”

The Spurs won despite 29 points from Jrue Holiday and 21 from Scoot Henderson. For the second game in a row, they made life difficult for Portland All-Star Deni Avdija, who went 3 of 15 from the floor.

Avdija salvaged a 19-point night by going 12 of 16 from the free-throw line.

The Spurs look to open up decisive 3-1 series lead in Game 4 on Sunday at the Moda Center.

Here are three takeaways from Friday’s Wemby-less win:

1. With win, Spurs buy Wemby time

The call to sit Wembanyama was an easy one. It was also largely out of the Spurs’ hands.

The NBA is largely in control of concussion protocol, meaning Wembanyama had to be cleared by Spurs doctors and those affiliated with the league.

It was probably a gift that Wembanyama didn’t quite get there Friday. He couldn’t argue the decision to sit him.

Instead, Wembanyama got an extra two days — at least — to recover from his concussion. The Spurs won to take a 2-1 series lead, already accomplishing their one job of regaining home-court advantage no matter what happens in Game 4.

That brings the Spurs to an interesting crossroads come Sunday.

Having already won one game in Portland, the Spurs could opt to sit Wembanyama again in Game 4, even if he passes concussion protocol.

That would give the All-Star center an additional two days before Game 5 in San Antonio on Tuesday.

Either way, Wembanyama’s status bears watching heading into Game 4.

2. A grown-up game from the rookies

There was a time earlier this season in which the thought of playing two rookies at the same time scared Mitch Johnson to death.

He had little choice at times Friday. The Spurs’ two youngest players made their coach look like a genius.

Harper scored 12 of his points during the third quarter, putting his fingerprints all over the run that took the Spurs from down 15 to up 15.

The 20-year-old guard pushed the pace, got to the foul line (5 of 6 in the third quarter) and helped keep the Spurs’ offense afloat throughout dry spells.

Spurs guard Dylan Harper on Manu Ginobili’s influence and mindset coming off the bench: “I sat down with him and talked to him. Obviously, I’m playing in a role I’m not used to, but he put it in my head that you have to impact the game any way you can.” pic.twitter.com/kQe5QD2RG1

— Spurs Nation (@ Spurs_Nation) April 25, 2026

Harper’s 27 points were his most as a pro. Combined with 10 rebounds, it gave Harper his first NBA double-double.

And it came in Game 3 of a tied playoff series.

Then there was Carter Bryant, whose numbers don’t scream off the box score (three points, six rebounds) but was almost as impactful as his draft class mate.

Bryant’s boundless energy on both ends sparked the Spurs. Of those six boards, four came on the offensive end.

Both Spurs’ rookies took a big step Friday toward earning their coach’s trust.

— Spurs Nation (@ Spurs_Nation) April 25, 2026

3. Spurs stay small but survive

Luke Kornet functioned well as Wembanyama’s fill-in, producing 14 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks in 30 minutes.

How Johnson handled the 18 minutes Kornet spent on the bench was most interesting.

Instead of leaning on one of the three veteran big men still left on his bench — Mason Plumlee, Bismack Biyombo or Kelly Olynyk — Johnson used Bryant as the small-ball center for most of those minutes.

It was an approach Johnson has employed before – as recently as Game 2, after Wembanyama went out. There was some question, however, if the Spurs would stick with it for a larger sample size Friday.

Johnson did, and it paid off.

Despite giving up size, the Spurs were able to win the rebounding battle 50-45. They outrebounded Portland on the offensive glass 16-14, and outscored the Blazers in second-chance points 22-12.

Surviving the moments Kornet had to spend on the bench proved a big factor in the Spurs’ being able to hold on for the victory.
