Spurs vs. Trail Blazers: Game 4 keys San Antonio victory in Portland

Game 4 Keys to victory

Light a Candle for Wemby

It would be nice for the Spurs if they could face Game 4 with their best player in uniform.

Two days after an ugly meeting between his chin and the Frost Bank Center hardwood in Game 2, Wembanyama couldn’t quite progress through all the steps of the NBA’s concussion protocol before tipoff Friday.

The Spurs will enter Sunday with fingers crossed the league can clear him before Game 4.

Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper and Luke Kornet stepped up to help the Spurs weather Wembanyama’s absence in Game 3.

They would rather not have to try to win without him again.

The Spurs have proven time and again that Wembanyama’s health is an utmost priority. The sooner he can safely return to the series, however, the better.

Brace for desperation

Having blown a 15-point lead in the second half of Game 3 against a Spurs team down one Victor Wembanyama, the Trail Blazers are likely to come into Game 4 in desperation mode.

It is not an elimination game, per se, but it might as well be for the Blazers. If they head back to San Antonio in a 3-1 hole, the series is all but over for Portland.

The Spurs should expect the Blazers to play like their season depends on it in Game 4, because it more or less does.

Taking a cue from dogged veteran guard Jrue Holiday, the Trail Blazers always play hard. They always play physically.

With their season on the line, the Blazers are likely to ramp up the intensity Sunday in the raucous confines of the Moda Center.

The Spurs must be ready to take Portland’s best punch.

Slow Avdija’s running mates

The Spurs’ defense, though mostly solid so far, has had a nasty habit of letting one of Portland’s guards get going in each of the three games of the series.

In Game 1, it was All-Star Deni Avdija, who led the Blazers with 31 points. In Game 2, it was Scoot Henderson who played hero on his way to en route to a 31-point night of his own.

In Game 3, it was Holiday’s turn. The 35-year-old two-time All-Star got loose for 29 points and for a while seemed capable of boosting Portland into the driver’s seat of the series.

The Spurs have done a masterful job against Advija since his Game 1 explosion. Advija was 3 of 15 from the field Friday, though the Spurs did send him to the foul line 16 times.

If the Spurs can keep Advija under wraps again Sunday, while also preventing one of his teammates from erupting instead, they stand a good chance of taking Game 4.
