(Victor Wembanyama)

(De’Aaron Fox)

(Stephon Castle)

(Devin Vassell)

(Julian Champagnie)

(Luke Kornet)

评分:A-

(Dylan Harper)

(Keldon Johnson)

(Harrison Barnes)

(Carter Bryant)

(Mitch Johnson)

Playoff Grades: San Antonio Spurs vs. Portland Trail Blazers – Game #2

The San Antonio Spurs lost Game 2 to the Portland Trail Blazers in a contest that will be remembered for Victor Wembanyama’s concussion. The Spurs led by double-digits in the fourth quarter but saw their offense dry up and ultimately lose by a final count of 106-103. San Antonio and Portland are now tied 1-1 in this best of seven series.

Stats: Spurs vs. Blazers

Spurs vs. Blazers – Final Grades

Victor Wembanyama

The biggest story of this game was the fact that Wembanyama suffered a concussion after hitting the floor hard. He left the game and his status going forward is uncertain. Prior to the injury, he was playing at an acceptable level, though he hadn’t yet tried to take over the game. But, yeah, the focus right now is on his health.

Grade: Inc.

De’Aaron Fox

It was definitely a disappointing evening for Fox. He finished with only 17 points on 16 shot attempts. He tallied just four assists compared to three turnovers in 34 minutes. His defense was substandard. Most damning, Fox played poorly in the fourth quarter. The Spurs lean on him to be their closer and he laid an egg in Game 2. For San Antonio to have any lasting success in this postseason run, they’ll need Fox to step up and play much better — particularly in situations where Wembanyama is out and someone is needed to carry the load.

Grade: D

Stephon Castle

Castle led the team in field goal attempts with 20 but he too struggled with efficiency. He scored 18 points in 38 minutes. Like Fox, Castle struggled in the fourth. I didn’t like his shot selection and he missed badly on a few important shots. Castle’s young so it’s understandable that he’d struggle in a high pressure situation but his inability to score was made worse by the fact that the Blazers were laying off him. If Portland and other teams can sag and basically ignore his whereabouts, that’ll be a major problem going forward. Castle had some good moments on defense and on the boards but his playmaking was average at best and he was also too sloppy with the ball. Going forward, let’s hope he can bounce back and play more like the version of himself we saw down the stretch of the regular season.

Grade: D+

Devin Vassell

Vassell was 0-for-5 from three-point land, which obviously didn’t help matters for a Spurs team that shot worse than 30% from the deep. But outside of that wayward marksmanship from deep, I thought Vassell played pretty damn well. He was 6-for-11 from two-point range, 4-for-5 at the free throw line and turned it over just once. His all-around effort was commendable. He had 12 rebounds — many of which were of the highly contested variety. Vassell’s defensive energy level was sky high. He led the team with three steals and also recorded a blocked shot. Just like in Game 1, there were stretches where Vassell was clearly the most important cog in the wheel. Hopefully he can keep it up.

Grade: B+

Julian Champagnie

Champagnie played decently well, although his rhythm was discombobulated due to uncharacteristic foul trouble. He had nine points in 27 minutes and missed only one shot from the field. His defense was good, he efforted at a high level and his all-around basketball IQ was sound. But, again, foul trouble seemed to keep him from finding a groove. As the series progresses, the Spurs need to find a way to get Champagnie more shots.

Grade: B

Luke Kornet

Kornet’s play was clearly a bright spot for the good guys. Offensively, he was really good. His five boards on that end were impactful, he set mean screens, his rolling kept Portland occupied and he authored smart passes. Defensively, Kornet held up well in the paint and his rotations to the perimeter were impressively swift. When Wembanyama went down, the Spurs needed the team’s backup center to step up. Kornet did exactly that and played well enough for the Spurs to win.

Grade: A-

Dylan Harper

For being a rookie guard, Harper is showing quality flashes. Even in this dense setting, he’s still able to get to where he wants. In Game 2, he ended up with ten points in 23 minutes and hit better than half his shots from the field and both of his freebies. I also loved his defensive intensity and he rarely made a mistake on that end. It wasn’t all sunshine, however. Harper had some outstanding passes but his level of playmaking was more muted than usual. He also had three turnovers and his decision-making wasn’t always dependable. All in all, Harper is doing his role and showing positive signs but I wouldn’t say he has been a notable asset yet in this series.

Grade: B

Keldon Johnson

The 2025-26 NBA Sixth Man of the Year award winner improved on his Game 1 performance. That said, Game 2 was still underwhelming. He had seven points and four rebounds but was just 3-for-7 from the field. Defensively, while Johnson had a pair of steals, he did more harm than good — particularly out on the perimeter. If Johnson can make his forcefulness felt against the Blazers, that’d make life easier for the Spurs.

Grade: C

Harrison Barnes

Barnes left the game after suffering a shoulder stinger. The good news is he should be available going forward. Seeing Barnes in pain was jarring because he’s been such an ironman for San Antonio. In Game 2, he didn’t do much damage in his 15 minutes of playing time. Four points and a rebound isn’t exactly game-changing production. There were moments where it looked like Barnes tried to provide a steady veteran hand — but the outcomes were rarely positive.

Grade: C

Carter Bryant

Considering that Bryant was forced to play center for stretches and considering his rawness, I thought he did pretty well. He scored seven points in 12 minutes, provided spacing, athleticism and vivacity, and looked reasonably confident. There’s a good chance that he’ll need to play an important role going forward — let’s hope he’s up to the task. Game 2 was a step in the right direction with that goal in mind.

Grade: B

Mitch Johnson

It’s difficult to find working pathways when your main player is forced out but Coach Mitch deserves some of the blame for the Game 2 loss. He didn’t push the right buttons rotation-wise in the fourth quarter. The strategies during the non-Wemby, non-Kornet minutes were iffy. The playcalling in money time was too basic. Hopefully Coach Mitch and a handful of players have better games in the coming days.
