Weather the non-Kornet minutes
So far in the series, the Spurs have been mostly fine in the minutes Victor Wembanyama has spent off the floor.
That is mostly due to 7-foot-2 backup center Luke Kornet.
Even after Wembanyama departed Game 2 with a head injury, the Spurs won the 24 minutes with Kornet on the court by six points. They lost the 8 minutes with Kornet on the bench by nine.
For Spurs coach Mitch Johnson, determining the best way to approach Kornet’s rest minutes will be paramount in Game 3.
In Game 2, Johnson kept his other backup centers (Mason Plumlee, Bismack Biyombo and Kelly Olynyk) in mothballs, choosing to fill the non-Kornet minutes with Carter Bryant as a small-ball center — even against 7-foot-2 Blazers big man Donovan Clingan.
That approach comes with some advantages — Bryant’s athleticism and ability to knock down the occasional 3-pointer can prove problematic for opposing big men — but it ultimately led to the Spurs’ getting wiped out on the boards.
Portland scored 23 points on second chances Tuesday, a number that loomed large in a three-point outcome.
Heading into Game 3, Johnson must decide how much size is too much to give up, or whether it is time to trust any of the three veteran bigs at the end of his bench.
Prepare for physicality
The Blazers played their way into the playoffs on the back of a stifling defense triggered by a corps of rangy, long-armed, physical wings.
After Wembanyama went out in Game 2, Jrue Holiday, Toumani Camara and even Scoot Henderson made life miserable for the Spurs’ remaining playmakers on the perimeter.
De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle combined to go 2 of 10 for six points in the fourth quarter, which allowed Portland to claw back from a 14-point deficit.
The Spurs do not want to play one-on-one with the Blazers’ bevy of defenders, which is easier said than done if Wembanyama — one of the NBA’s best advantage creators — is unavailable.
Ball movement will be critical. So will defense. If the Spurs can get stops and get out in transition, it prevents Portland from being able to set up its clamp-down defense.
More from others
If Wembanyama is indeed sidelined, it is going to take a village to even attempt to replace his production.
Much of the onus falls on Fox and Castle — the team’s two remaining leading scorers — but others need to join the fray as well.
The Spurs’ bench, an overwhelming plus for much of the season, has been largely quiet so far in the playoffs.
Sixth Man of the Year winner Keldon Johnson has totaled 10 points on 4 of 11 shooting through two games. Dylan Harper, a shoo-in first-team All-Rookie selection, showed positive signs with 10 points in Game 2.
The Spurs will need more from both if they are to survive without Wembanyama.
