Game 2 Keys to Victory

Prepare for regression

The most obvious factor in the Spurs’ Game 1 victory was 3-point shooting. The Spurs made their shots from deep. Portland did not.

At 15-for-33 (44.5%), the Spurs finished a bit above their average clip. The Trail Blazers connected on a dreadful 10 of 38 (26.3%), well below their average.

That 15-point swing from beyond the arc was the difference in the game.

The Spurs should expect Portland to shoot a bit better in Game 2. The Spurs should also expect to shoot a bit worse themselves.

Keep an eye on Jrue Holiday, who hit 37.8% from long range during the regular season but finished Sunday a woeful 1-of-7.

The Spurs need to tighten up around the margins to account for the upcoming regression from 3-point range.

Keep everyone involved

Victor Wembanyama’s 35 points were the headline in Game 1, and for good reason. It was the most points for a player making his playoff debut in Spurs history.

As Portland proved in wasting a big night from All-Star guard Deni Avdija, however, one man does not a playoff victory make.

The Spurs won Game 1 because they also won the minutes when Wembanyama was off the floor.

They accomplished that despite quiet nights from their two most prolific bench scorers, Keldon Johnson and Dylan Harper. Kudos to backup center Luke Kornet, who held the fort when Wembanyama rested, with 10 points, six rebounds and some formidable defense in his 14 minutes of action.

De’Aaron Fox’s 17 points and eight assists were crucial, as were Devin Vassell’s 15 points and four timely 3-pointers.

If the Spurs continue to get production from players who are not 7-foot-4 and French, it will go a long way toward staking them to a 2-0 series lead.

Stay on the boards

In Game 1, the Spurs won the rebounding battle 45-38, a quietly huge factor in the win. They were especially adept at limiting the Blazers’ work on the offensive glass, a huge part of Portland’s victory formula.

The Spurs grabbed 11 offensive rebounds to the Trail Blazers’ eight, and matched Portland in second-chance points with 13.

Portland probably cannot win if those numbers are close to even. The Spurs’ big night on the glass came with Wembanyama, their leading rebounder during the regular season, securing a modest five.

Instead, the Spurs’ domination of the boards proved a group effort, with seven players collecting at least four. Stephon Castle and Keldon Johnson tied for the team lead with seven.

Another good gang rebounding night is imperative if the Spurs aim to take Game 2.
