pic.twitter.com/sJ4fM5VaRs

3 Takeaways as Victor Wembanyama, Spurs take Game 1 from Portland

San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) reacts during the first half of Game 1 of a first-round NBA playoff series against the Portland Trail Blazers at Frost Bank Center, Sunday, April 19, 2026, in San Antonio.
The Portland Trail Blazers played their first game of the season against Victor Wembanyama in Game 1 of the Western Conference playoffs Sunday.
It is fair to say they did not care much for the experience.
With the 7-foot-4 Wembanyama leading the way, the second-seeded Spurs celebrated their long-awaited return the NBA postseason with a hard-fought 111-98 victory over the seventh-seeded Blazers.
It was the Spurs’ first playoff game since 2019, when they lost to the Denver Nuggets in seven games in the first round.
“I thought they responded great,” said Spurs coach Mitch Johnson, who was also making his NBA playoff debut. “We talked about this was going to be an atmosphere and a level of energy that none of us have felt. And that’s OK.”
Wembanyama, whose arrival as the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2023 staked the first step in the Spurs’ path back to the playoffs, did not disappoint in his inaugural postseason foray.
His 35 points set a franchise record for a playoff debut, surpassing the 32 put up by Tim Duncan in Game 1 of the 1998 playoffs against Phoenix.
Wembanyama’s 21 points in the first half were the most for a player in his playoff debut since the start of the play-by-play era in 1997.
“It is obviously different, but we’ve been really good in the regular season,” Wembanyama said. “So, we have no reason to act differently or do anything different.”

Former San Antonio Spurs players David Robinson, left, and Tim Duncan watch the fourth quarter of Game 1 of a first-round NBA playoff series between the Spurs and the Portland Trail Blazers at Frost Bank Center on Sunday, April 19, 2026, in San Antonio. The Spurs won 111-98.
De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle each added 17 points to help the Spurs draw first blood heading into Game 2 on Tuesday at the Frost Bank Center.
All-Star guard Deni Avdija led Portland with 30 points and 10 assists, but the Spurs did well to limit the damage most of his teammates could inflict.
Scoot Henderson contributed 18 points for the Trail Blazers, who are making their first playoff appearance since 2021.
“The Spurs put you in tough positions,” Portland coach Tiago Splitter said. “Against them, you’ve got to shoot the ball well from three(-point range). We didn’t. We’ve got to shoot the ball better.”
Wembanyama, of course, puts opponents in the toughest positions of all. Thanks to him, the Blazers ended Sunday in a 1-0 series hole.
“I think we’re all just more sharp,” Spurs forward Julian Champagnie said. “We’re all more locked in. I think that was kind of the thing. And Vic, he does a really good job of leading by example.”
Here are three takeaways from Sunday’s Game 1 victory:
1. Wemby-led win was worth the wait
As much as Wembanyama tried to make his playoff debut seem like just another game, he couldn’t.
He wanted it too much. A sold-out crowd of 19,372 needed it.
“The first time I stepped on the court for warmups,” Wembanyama said, “I felt the atmosphere was different.”
The last time the Spurs were in the playoffs, Wembanyama was a 15-year-old playing in Nanterre on the outskirts of Paris.
His playoff debut was worth the wait.

Wembanyama got going early with a big first half, including a highlight-reel coast-to-coast dunk.
He finished with five 3-pointers and added a pair of blocks as the Spurs pulled away in the fourth quarter to lead by as many as 21 points.
The crowd, decked in coordinating Fiesta colors thanks to a free T-shirt giveaway at the Frost Bank Center, reveled in every moment of the Spurs’ return to the postseason.
“The fans were amazing. The atmosphere was crazy,” guard Devin Vassell said. “It took us a little bit to settle in. As we settled in that second half, that’s when we started playing our way.”

San Antonio Spurs guard Devin Vassell (24) celebrates a 3-pointer during the second half of Game 1 of a first-round NBA playoff series against the Portland Trail Blazers at Frost Bank Center, Sunday, April 19, 2026, in San Antonio. The Spurs won 111-98.
2. Defense leads way for Spurs
During the regular season, there was one barometer able to predict with 100% accuracy whether the Spurs would win that night.
Eleven times, the Spurs held opponents to less than 100 points. The Spurs were 11-0.
One game into the playoffs, the Spurs are 1-0 in that regard.
Portland shot 42.9% from the field. The Trail Blazers made only 10 of 38 3-pointers.
The Spurs opened the postseason by holding Portland to 21 points in the first quarter. The Blazers did not manage more than 28 points in any of the four frames.
All of it added up to a suffocating Spurs victory.
Avdija got loose a bit – it is what All-Stars do, after all – but the Spurs were able to at least keep him off the foul line.
One of the NBA’s most prolific free-throwers, Advija went to the line a manageable six times Sunday, making four. One of those attempts came via technical foul on Spurs coach Mitch Johnson.

By comparison, Castle went to the foul line eight times for the Spurs, making eight.
Defensively, the Spurs were adept and making Portland into a one-man show for much of the night.
Five of the nine players who logged at least 16 minutes for Portland were held to single digits.
3. Hats off to Vassell
Outside of Keldon Johnson, no player on the Spurs’ roster had played more NBA games without a playoff appearance than Vassell.
It was fitting the sixth-year pro played a crucial role in the Spurs’ Game 1 victory. Of Vassell’s 15 points, eight came in one dizzying stretch of 1:15 of the third quarter that allowed the Spurs to pull away.
The Blazers had closed within five with 5:53 left in the frame when Vassell buried a left wing 3-pointer. Moments later, Vassell hit another 3-pointer, then followed that with a 9-footer off the glass.
By the time he was finished, the Spurs were ahead by 11. It would be more or less a double-digit game from that point on.
Vassell also added a pair of blocked shots in the third quarter – one against Jrue Holiday and one against the 7-foot-2 Donovan Clingan – to inject his team with a jolt of energy.
On both ends of the floor, Vassell’s fingerprints were all over Sunday’s win.
