Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs’ bevy of downhill-attacking guards could use a relentless pick-and-roll game to make Clingan into a defensive liability and force Portland coach Tiago Splitter to turn elsewhere.
Pace yourselves
So much of the Spurs’ offensive success this season was built on pace – playing fast, running in transition and getting actions started before an opponent can get its defense set.
That will be doubly important against a Portland team that features big defenders at every position, whose sole goal it is to pressure ball-handlers and force an offense to take its time.
If the Spurs are using all 24 seconds to find a shot on most possessions, the Blazers have a chance.
Portland boasts the NBA’s third-best defensive rating since the All-Star break, tied with the Spurs at 109.3 points per 100 possessions.
The trick for the Spurs will be to get their offense initiated before physical Trail Blazers defenders like Jrue Holiday and Toumani Camara can get their claws into them.
