Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox eyes title run in second playoff appearance

San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox (4) drives to the basket during an NBA game against the Dallas Mavericks at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Friday, April 10, 2026. Fox, who has been instrumental in the Spurs’ turnaround this season after being acquired in a trade in February 2025, is one of the few players on the team with playoff experience.
Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox views this postseason as a golden opportunity to add in a big way to his already impressive resume.
“I’ve been All-NBA. I’ve been an All-Star,” he said. “The last thing I think that there is, is to win a championship. And I think we have a good shot at it.”
The Spurs’ pursuit of their sixth NBA title and first since 2014 begins Sunday night in just the second playoff appearance for Fox in his nine-season career. The two-time All-Star guard made it to the postseason with Sacramento in 2023 only to be eliminated by Golden State in seven games.
Odds favor the 62-win, second-seeded Spurs getting past the 42-win, seventh-seeded Portland Trail Blazers in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs, but Fox and his teammates envision an even deeper run, one that would cement his legacy.
“We’re trying to compete for a championship,” he said.
The pressure is on Fox to help make that happen after the Spurs gave him a four-year, $229-million maximum contract extension in August that will keep him under their control through the 2029-2030 season.
Even before they made that big commitment to him, the Spurs made it clear they were counting on Fox helping them become a championship-caliber team.
“His resume speaks for itself,” coach Mitch Johnson said after general manager Brian Wright orchestrated the blockbuster, three-team deal that brought Fox to San Antonio from the Kings in February 2025.
“He’s a top player in this league, both ends of the floor, dynamic in every sense of the word.”
Fox’s accomplishments since he entered the league as the fifth overall pick of the 2017 NBA Draft support Johnson’s description.
Before this season when his per-game scoring average dipped because he willingly shared the ball with young guards Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper, Fox averaged at least 23 points in five consecutive seasons. He earned All-NBA recognition in 2023, the same season he was selected to his first All-Star game. Fox led the league in steals in 2023-24.
In 2021-22, he collected the league’s inaugural Jerry West Clutch Player of the Year award. This season, he played in another All-Star Game.
But he lacks what counts most — a championship.
“This is obviously a big, big point in his career, just like ours, but especially for him, being on a team like this that has a chance to make a run,” Castle said. “From what I’ve seen this week and leading up to it, he’s pretty locked in.”
Fox carried the scoring load for the Spurs in helping them go 2-1 against Portland in their regular season series. With Victor Wembanyama out for all three games and Castle sidelined for two, the Katy native and Cypress Lakes graduate averaged 27 points over the three meetings.
Undoubtedly, the Blazers will have a prominent place for Fox in their defensive game plan.

San Antonio Spurs guard De’aaron Fox (4) looks to make a pass against Portland Trail Blazers forward Toumani Camara during a home game at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Wednesday, April 8, 2026.
“I think (Toumani) Camara will guard me more,” Fox said when asked if he expected to be defended by Jrue Holiday. "Playing against Jrue, he was, especially in my first five or six years in the league when he was with New Orleans first and then he was with Milwaukee, one of the guys I hated playing against. Now Toumani’s actually right up there as well.
“…They have a lot of versatile defenders. They have rim protection (in 7-foot-3 Donovan Clingan). There’s a reason that they were able to get into the playoffs and a lot of it has to do with what Deni (Avdija) did offensively and then what all those other guys do defensively.”
Fox, who is a candidate for the NBA’s teammate of the year award, has spent the past several months trying to coach the team’s playoff newbies on what to expect in the postseason. He said they got a good taste of it this week during film study and practice.
“During the season, you’ll see little adjustments here and there, obviously you want to play the guy’s tendencies,” Fox said. “But now it’s like if he’s going left we’re doing this, if he’s going right we’re doing this, if this person’s setting the screen we’re doing this. … The first practice we had after we knew who we were playing against, the younger guys, the guys who haven’t been here before, definitely got to see what a different scout was like between a regular season game and a playoff game.”
Fox has been there before. Now, he’s hoping they all find out what it’s like to play in the NBA Finals.
