Playoff anticipation has Spurs’ Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell ‘antsy’
The two longest-tenured current members of the Spurs can’t wait for Sunday night to arrive.
Keldon Johnson (seventh season) and Devin Vassell (sixth) will be making the first playoff appearances of their careers when the team’s first-round best-of-seven Western Conference matchup with Portland gets underway at 8 p.m. at the Frost Bank Center.
“Yeah, me and KJ are super excited,” Vassell said after practice Friday at the Victory Capital Performance Center.
"We’ve been talking about it over and over. We were even talking about it this morning. But it’s just good to be in this position, not only just for us, but for the community and for the fans that have been here and kind of been waiting.
“It’s been a long time overdue, but we’re here and we’re ready to go.”
Johnson (452 games) and Vassell (370) will enter the contest ranked fourth and sixth, respectively, among active NBA players without a playoff appearance. As a team, the Spurs are making their first appearance in the playoff since they lost in seven games to Denver in the first round of the 2019 Western Conference Playoffs.
“Feeling a little antsy,” Vassell said. “I’m ready to play. I haven’t played for a week. It feels really weird, but it’s been a good time off. Everybody’s healthy, feeling good, so ready to get this thing going.”
Vassell said he knows the postseason will be different from the regular season in terms of “physicality” and “a lot of the media, a lot of the outside noise” and that “everything is heightened.” To counter all that, he said the team’s plan is to stick with what worked so well for them during the regular season when they won 62 games to finish the season seeded No. 2 in the West behind Oklahoma City.
“Our plan is just to be the same, focus on us and the same stuff that we’ve been doing this past 82 we played. Nothing really changes for us,” he said.
