3 Takeaways as Spurs fall to Nuggets in season finale

The Denver Nuggets came into Sunday’s regular-season finale content to head into the playoffs as the No. 4 seed in the Western Conference.

The Spurs declined to let them.

With starters and key players out for both teams, Denver dealt the Spurs a 128-118 defeat that solidified postseason seeding.

Now it’s on to the playoffs.

Victor Wembanyama did not play for the Spurs, grabbing an extra day to rest his sore ribs before the postseason begins. Denver All-Star center Nikola Jokic played only a half Sunday, just enough to secure his 65th appearance of the season and remain eligible for postseason awards.

The Nuggets also sat Jamal Murray, Aaron Gordon, Cam Johnson, Tim Hardaway Jr and Christian Braun, knowing a loss combined with the Lakers win over Utah would have dropped them to fourth.

Denver won anyway behind 25 points from Julian Strawther and 23 from the aforementioned Jokic. The Spurs got 24 points from De’Aaron Fox, 19 from Devin Vassell and 18 from Keldon Johnson.

It wasn’t enough to get them past the short-handed Nuggets, who are the only team to have beaten the Spurs since March 1. Denver has done it three times in that span.

Here are three takeaways from Sunday’s defeat, which ended the Spurs’ season at 62-20, tied for the third-most wins in club history:

  1. Spurs’ center rotation will be better for the playoffs

With Wembanyama out Sunday to rest his sore ribs and top back Luke Kornet sidelined with a minor shoulder injury, the Spurs were somewhat shorthanded against the Nuggets.

Mason Plumlee started at center for the first time since joining the Spurs. Bismack Biyombo saw minutes behind him. The Spurs went small for swaths of the game with 6-6 Carter Bryant at center.

Even with Jokic only playing one half for Denver, the undersized Spurs were oft-abused in the paint.

That will be less of a problem once the postseason begins next weekend.

Wembanyama finished his third NBA season by averaging 25 points, 11.5 rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game, becoming the sixth player in league annals to reach those marks in the same season.

The most recent was Shaquille O’Neal for the Los Angeles Lakers in 1999-2000.

Wembanyama is the only player to hit those thresholds while averaging fewer than 30 minutes per game.

The All-Star center’s workload is set to increase once the playoffs begin. His counting stats could skyrocket as well.

2. What it means in Western Conference race?

Sunday’s outcomes across the league went a long way toward clearing up the Western Conference playoff pairings. Denver secured the No. 3 seed, setting up a potential second-round matchup with the Spurs.

Elsewhere, Portland’s victory over Sacramento put the Trail Blazers eighth place, eliminating the Los Angeles Clippers from contention for that spot.

The upshot is this: The Spurs will face the winner of Tuesdays’ play-in game between Phoenix and Portland in their first playoff game since 2019.

No matter the Spurs’ opponent, Game 1 is set for Sunday at 8 p.m. at the Frost Bank Center.

3. Spurs toast a pair of Iron Men

The season ended with 18 NBA players appearing in all 82 games. Three of them were involved in Sunday’s game at the Frost Bank Center.

The Spurs had a pair of an Iron Men, with Julian Champagnie reaching that number for the second season in a row and Keldon Johnson accomplishing it for the first time in his career.

Bruce Brown played in his 82nd game this season for Denver.

Champagnie is the first Spurs player to ring up back-to-back 82-game campaigns since Patty Mills did it in 2017-18 and 2018-19.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson praised his two iron men for their durability.

“To have those consistent puzzle pieces is a huge part of why we are where we are,” Johnson said. “Those guys have shown up to work every single night and it goes a long way.”
