Spurs TV voice Jacob Tobey opens up about ‘remarkable’ anthem gig

Spurs television play-by-play announcer Jacob Tobey shook off some last-second jitters to sing a deeply felt, intimate rendition of the national anthem ahead of Monday night’s game against Philadelphia.

Performing on Native American Heritage Night with members of the South San Army JROTC serving as the color guard, the proud member of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe strummed his guitar while hitting all the right notes of “The Star Spangled Banner” in front of a sellout crowd of 18,354 at the Frost Bank Center.

“I wasn’t really nervous probably until I walked up to the mic and the lights went out,” Tobey said Tuesday. "I think that’s when it hit me like, all right, I’m about to do this now. That’s the most people I’ve ever sung in front of before.

“And then I just started going and I felt like I was in a groove. And the crowd always helps in those situations when they clap or hoot and holler at certain notes or certain times during the song. That makes you go even better and have more energy.”

Tobey, who has been performing in front of audiences since he was 15, called the experience “remarkable.”

“I dreamed about singing in front of that many people, but you never quite know,” he said. “And so it was cool.”

The crowd responded with an ovation that struck an emotional chord with the 29-year-old Massachusetts native.

“I just felt the love from the crowd and the city,” he said. “People sent me so many nice messages on Instagram or on social media and I’m trying to get back to everybody. But it was cool. … I’m super glad I did it and, hopefully, I can do it again at some point.”

Fans on social media showered Tobey, 29, with praise.

“One of the best renditions of the anthem this entire season. Chills,” Emilio Flores wrote on X.

“Yesssss @JacobRTobey Loved it!!” wrote Quannette Castle, mother of Spurs guard Stephon Castle, whose triple-double helped the Spurs down the Sixers 115-102 for their 60th victory of the season.

Native American Heritage Night marked the final event of the season honoring the Spurs’ diverse fan base. The club’s 2025-26 promotional calendar also included nights honoring Filipino, French, Hispanic and Black heritages, women, LGBTQ people, veterans, the military and first responders.

“These opportunities to do cultural and theme nights really gives us a very unique opportunity to use this incredible platform to make that community feel supported and uplifted, to really honor who they are, their deep traditions,” Patricia Mejia, Spurs Sports & Entertainment’s chief impact & inclusion officer.
