Why the end of the Spurs’ winning streak was good for them

The Spurs walked out of Ball Arena on Saturday after a 136-134 overtime loss at Denver downtrodden for the first time in 3 ½ weeks.
Their 11-game winning streak was over. For an intents and purposes, so was their pursuit of Oklahoma City for the top seed in the Western Conference.
The team’s 60th win would have to wait.
For all of that, the Spurs had two words for the Nuggets: Thank you.
“Everything that happened is good for us,” Victor Wembanyama said. “It was a real test against a team that is actually playing for something right now.”
In an atmosphere that was as close as the Spurs will get to the playoffs without actually getting to the playoffs, Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets overcame a 13-point deficit to beat the Spurs to the OT finish line.
Jokic finished with 40 points and 13 assists, including a pair of baskets in the final minute of OT to seal the deal for Denver.
Wembanyama fought back with 34 points, 18 rebounds and five blocks.
The Spurs led by six with 1:39 to go, then gave up a 4-point play to Cameron Johnson to pull the Nuggets with two. Aaron Gordon tied the score on a dunk with 6.2 to play, setting the stage for an OT period that belonged to Jokic.
“It was an extremely competitive game,” said coach Mitch Johnson, whose team returns home to face another over-.500 team Monday against Philadelphia. “There were high stakes from the first possession for sure. It was a fun game to be a part of.”
The Spurs came into the night having won seven consecutive games by double figures. Four of the 11 victories on their season-long streak had come by at least 25 points.
In Denver, the Spurs faced a 50-win Nuggets team fighting with the hobbled Los Angeles Lakers for the third seed in the Western Conference.
If Saturday marked a playoff stress test for the Spurs, they failed. That is OK, for now.
“I think it’s something we needed, especially with the games we’ve had for the last week and a half against teams that aren’t fighting for what we’re fighting for,” forward Julian Champagnie said.
The Spurs squandered their best chance to knot the score in overtime when De’Aaron Fox and Devin Vassell misconnected on a 2-on-1 fast break.
Fox regained the rebound after his lob to Vassell went awry, but missed a short jumper.
Jokic followed with a floater on the other end to push the Nuggets back ahead by four 9.8 seconds remaining.
Afterward, Fox took the blame for the failed alley-oop.
“I told Dev, ‘I should have thrown it directly to you and made Jokic have to chase it,’ “ said Fox, who was 7 of 19. “You throw a lob, he can get back into the play. That’s on me.”
Saturday’s defeat was the Spurs’ first since March 12, when they lost at home … to Denver.
The Spurs and Nuggets play again once more in the April 12 regular-season finale at the Frost Bank Center. The teams could be on a collision course for a second-round playoff meeting, assuming Denver overtakes the No. 3 spot.
Champagnie gets game ball: Champagnie did not realize he had broken Danny Green’s single-season franchise 3-point record Saturday until after the game, when assistant coach Mike Noyes presented him the game ball.
“I thought, ‘Oh wait did I beat it?’ ” Champagnie said.
Champagnie made 6 of 9 from beyond the arc against the Nuggets to bring his season 3-point total to 192. Green owned the previous record of 191, set in 2014-15.
“I give all the credit to my teammates, passing me the ball and finding me when I’m open,” Champagnie said. “It was good to celebrate it with them.”
Champagnie had only two regrets about snapping the record Saturday. One was that the Spurs lost the game.
The other? He halfway wishes he would have saved the record-breaker for Monday, when the Spurs face a 76ers team that waived him in February 2022.
“That would have been lovely,” Champagnie said with a smile.
