And as a Kornet, I literally share a name with a Russian anti-tank guided missile, so yeah, let’s do this.

1. Choose Your Own Adventure

You want the top prospect? You’ll have to earn it, Hinkie. In this proposal, teams are locked into draft order based on their year-end records. The worst team in the NBA gets a 100% lock for the first pick, second-worst gets the second pick and so on and so forth. “Luke, teams could just go 0–82 to get the top pick! The most important dynamic comes in a match between two ‘draft teams,’ say Team A and Team B. One may think the two teams would just refuse to play, resulting in a tie score of 0–0. But it could be reasoned that after some time, in an effort to actualize their desired end of a loss, the coach for Team A begins directing A’s players to score on A’s own basket resulting in points for Team B. Team A would then maintain possession and continually inbound to repeatedly score on their own basket, putting Team B in a disadvantaged position by being unable to prevent their own points from accruing.

To quell these concerns of the competitive disadvantage of draft-draft games, rules like backcourt violations, inbounding, and scorekeeping will be altered in such a way that gives Team B the right to inbound the ball after a made attempt on Team A’s basket. Team B could then proceed to take the ball across half court to attempt to score on Team B’s own goal, resulting in points for Team A. Two pointers will be defined as any shot taken within either three point line to the adjacent basket, threes as all other field goal attempts and illegal contact for shots attempted on a basket will be awarded with the corresponding number of free throws to the targeted basket. This will ensure a game where both teams do their best to score on their own respective goals, and the team that scores the most will technically be the loser as they did so on their own basket, resulting in points for the opposing team. Players and coaches will get to utilize their hard-earned abilities to help their team put the ball in a basket and keep the other team from putting it in the other basket, which, in the end, is what basketball is really all about. Problem solved.

2. Anarchy

Back to standard rules. The season plays out as normal up until the All-star break, where teams will be ranked 1–30 based their records. The top 16 teams remain intact. The remaining 14 teams, like an expansion draft, get to protect a certain amount of players. The last-place team gets to protect only one player. The second worst team gets to protect two players. So on and so forth until the 14th worst team gets to protect all but one of its players. The remaining unprotected players are pooled together and placed in a draft. The 14-team draft commences in which the worst team gets the first pick of each of the 14-round draft while the 14th-worst team will get only one pick, the last pick of the first round. The other teams slot according and the draft continues until all players are selected. The rest of the season will then be played out and existing rules would be used to determine draft order. I’m not sure who wins and loses in this, but it sure would spice things up a bit. (Gentlemen of NBA Reddit, start your mock-draft engines!)

3. Survivor

Current lottery rules will be maintained in the traditional worst-teams-gets-the-best-odds sense. The Survivor Process begins once a team loses enough games to be no longer eligible for playoff contention. Then, following each successive loss, every player on the losing team will have to Survivor-style cast votes for which of their teammates will be voted off the team for the remainder of the season. Standard Survivor voting rules apply. I know what you’re thinking and, of course, Hidden Immunity Idols will be available and rights to the elimination shows will be sold to broadcast partners…

Best Case Scenario: Teams maintain competitive balance and a few back-end (or particularly hated front-end) roster players will be voted off a handful of teams in the last few games of the year.

Worst Case Scenario: Mobs, mutinies, and physical violence occur as players fight for their jobs. Alliances are made to protect from elimination. The realities of inter-team dynamics are quickly exposed as betrayals occur. The last scene of the season finale shows the last man standing, TJ McConnell. Panting heavily and hands bloodied, he’s not happy with what just went down. But really he only did what he has always done. Whatever it takes to survive.
