How the Spurs’ impressive scoring depth keeps opponents up at night

Wembanyama had 27 points, 18 rebounds, six assists and five blocks and Stephon Castle added 21 points and eight assists as the Spurs held off a fourth-quarter charge from the Heat.

LOS ANGELES — Coaches preparing defensive scouting reports for a game against the Spurs face a long night of writing.

With the Spurs boasting eight players averaging 10 or more points per game, a list topped by Victor Wembanyama, the breakdowns can be as thick as some of the science-fiction novels the 22-year-old Frenchman enjoys reading.

“Obviously, we know how talented Wemby is and how impactful he can be, but it’s not a one-man show ever there,” Detroit coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. “They have a bunch of talented perimeter players and wings who can be extremely aggressive and put a ton of pressure on you.”

The Los Angeles Clippers, who host the Spurs on Monday night in a potential first-round playoff preview, are well acquainted with the impressive scoring depth of the No. 2 team in the Western Conference. In overcoming a 25-point deficit to claim a 116-112 victory over the Clippers on March 6 at the Frost Bank Center, the Spurs landed six players in double figures.

The Spurs will arrive at Intuit Dome with Wembanyama averaging 24.3 points per game, Fox 19.1, Stephon Castle 16.6, Devin Vassell 14.2, Keldon Johnson 12.8, Dylan Harper 11.2, Julian Champagnie 11.1 and Harrison Barnes 10.2.

Wembanyama has led the team in scoring 30 times and Fox 14, but seven other players have also done it, including Luke Kornet, who averages 6.7 points a game.

The balanced scoring is the best in Spurs history, with the qualifier being a minimum of 50 games played for each player, and it also might eventually be the best in NBA history. It even tops the Spurs’ 2013-14 “Beautiful Game” squad that beat Miami in five games in the NBA Finals and featured six players averaging 10-plus points, all of whom logged at least 66 games.

The 1976-77 team, the Spurs’ first NBA squad, also had six players average 10-plus, with George Gervin (23.1) and Larry Kenon (21.9) topping the list. All six played 78 games or more.

The 2023-24 Indiana Pacers had nine players average 10-plus, but two fell short of the 50-game threshold. The 1966-67 Philadelphia 76ers had six players average 10-plus, but it stands out because they all averaged at least 12.0 points per game while appearing in at least 80 games in what was then an 81-game regular season. Led by Wilt Chamberlain (24.1), Hal Greer (22.1), Chet Walker (19.3) and Billy Cunningham (18.5), the Sixers won the NBA title after finishing 68-13, a league record at the time, and averaging 125.2 points, the most ever for an NBA champion.

It remains to be seen how far the Spurs can go in the playoffs, but their balanced scoring stands out among the league’s contenders.

“Any night, somebody can get off,” Vassell said. "That’s the best part of it. We really don’t care whose night it is. We know we’ve got Vic, we’ve got Fox, we’ve got Steph. Those guys are going to get their numbers. It makes it easy on them when (defenses) can’t help off of me and Ju (Champagnie). You’ve got Dylan and KJ (Johnson) coming off the bench and being aggressive.

“It’s just hard to game plan against when you have so many people who can get you 20 and sometimes 30 a night.”

Like the “Beautiful Game” team led by Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker, the current Spurs embrace the “good-to-great” philosophy preached by Gregg Popovich that emphasized movement, sharing the ball and passing up a good shot for an even better one.

That team averaged 25.2 assists per game. This year’s team averages 27.4.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said the Spurs entered the season determined to play “for each other” by excelling at the “fundamentals of screening and spacing and passing,” hallmarks of what he called a “very functional, well-balanced offense.”

“The biggest factor is it’s a team committed to trying to be diligent in finding the best shot on every possession,” Johnson said. “We have a lot of guys that can go get a shot whenever they want. And we have a lot of guys that can make a lot of those shots even when they may not be high percentage for everybody else. And to have that commitment to share the ball as a group has really allowed the ball to find open people and to have different guys have big nights. And when you have people committed to and putting energy into trying to help compliment that person (having a big night), it goes a long way.”

But the biggest factor in the balanced scoring has been personnel.

“We can all score,” Harper said.“That’s the beauty of this team. We can all dribble the ball. we have a bunch of ball handlers and a bunch of scorers. So every night, it’s not going to be Vic’s night. As a collective group, we can come and help him out however we can.”

In addition to being “extremely talented,” the Spurs are versatile “at all positions,” said Denver coach David Adelman, who guides a Nuggets team with seven players averaging 10-plus, although four have appeared in under 50 games.

That versatility is something Spurs general manager Brian Wright has been working for years to achieve while drafting players who fit today’s “position-less” game.

“They can play small ball. They can go bigger if they want to. The best teams in our league can do that,” Adelman said. “They can change their style. We just saw that with Oklahoma City (when it was dealing with injuries). They basically played four guards and a stretch five. And that was a challenge in itself, but they can do that. And that’s the roster (the Spurs) have.”

The challenge for the Spurs will come in the playoffs, Adelman said.

“When you get to the playoffs, if you can slow the pace down, obviously it’s harder to have eight guys scoring double figures,” Adelman said. “We’ve been through that in Denver. We’ve had really good years. Then you get to that tournament and the game slows down. But in the regular season with the pace (the Spurs) play at, it’s a problem.”

Like Bickerstaff, Adelman said it all boils down to the Spurs having a deep, talented roster.

“De’Aaron Fox is an All-Star point guard you have to load up to and you have to make sure you’re not giving him his left hand. Castle is a bull. He gets to the rim. All these guys are very skilled, talented offensive players,” Adelman said. “Wemby is special and a highlight factory, but there is a lot of good players on this team.”
