What Mitch Johnson had to say about Wembanyama’s desire to win awards

Mitch Johnson said it’s “important” to him that Spurs star Victor Wembanyama remain eligible for season-ending awards, although the coach was quick to add that the franchise cornerstone’s health will always be priority No. 1.

“In my opinion, Victor has the longest list of things he wants to do that are important probably in the history of basketball. And they all are important to me as well,” Johnson said after Saturday’s 115-102 win over Charlotte. “There’s a lot that goes into that and, at times, we have to make tough decisions because on that long list there are still things we prioritize and put on top of the list. But that guy, I think, is going to challenge us as long as we’re all here to continue to match that desire to keep checking those things off that list.”

Under NBA rules, players must appear in 65 games (playing a minimum of 20 minutes each) to be eligible for end-of-season awards. After sitting out Thursday’s game 136-131 loss to Denver, Wembanyama can miss only three more games.

But with 15 games left in the regular season, Wembanyama said he is in a good place health-wise after returning from a one-game absence due to a sore right ankle to play 31 minutes against the Hornets.

Wembanyama showed no signs of rust in recording 32 points, 12 rebounds, eight assists and three blocks against the Hornets.

“The inflammation in my body is basically down everywhere except in one place,” Wembanyama said, referring to his ankle.

Said Johnson, “I thought he was great. I thought he moved well. I thought he was in a stance. I thought he did a really good job, ran the floor. Yeah, I thought he looked good.”
