Victor Wembanyama emerged from another hard-fought victory Tuesday night to find he had another standard to chase.
At about the same time the Spurs were putting the final touches on a 125-116 victory over the Boston Celtics, Miami’s Bam Adebayo was finishing up the game of his life — or most anyone else’s.
By the time Wembanyama hit the interview podium, he was aware of the 83 points Adebayo had put up against the lowly Washington Wizards.
“Yeah, I saw,” Wembanyama said. “I think we’re in a league where there is plenty of inspiration to look up to. But yeah, I saw.”
Two days later, Adebayo’s box score still didn’t seem real: 20 of 43 from the field, including seven 3-pointers, and an NBA-record 36 free throws on 43 attempts.
His 83 points marked the closest a player has come to surpassing Wilt Chamberlain’s record of 100 points in a game, eclipsing the 81 Kobe Bryant scored against Toronto in January 2006.
News of Adebayo’s mind-blowing game spread across the NBA in real time like a brush fire.
Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox — Adebayo’s college roommate at Kentucky — was checking his phone at halftime at the Frost Bank Center when he saw the Heat center had 56 points.
On the bench a bit later, Spurs assistant Rashard Lewis informed Fox that Adebayo’s total had reached Kobe’s hallowed 81.
“I’m pissed he scored more than me,” Fox, whose career high is 60, later told an NBA TV crew. “But I’m happy for him for sure.”
Some NBA observers criticized Adebayo’s accomplishment as a blatant case of stat-padding.
The Heat left Adebayo in during the fourth quarter of a blowout against the hapless Wizards, in a game Miami eventually won 150-129, and intentionally fouled on defense to give him extra possessions to aid in his pursuit.
While that all is true, said Spurs guard Devin Vassell, it does not change the simple math that 83 points equals 83 points.
“If it was that easy, everyone would score 80 points,” Vassell said. “So at the end of the day, I give Bam his credit. Free throws or whatever the case may be, he got 80 points. Respect to him.”
Adebayo was not the likeliest suspect to pass Bryant on the NBA’s all-time single-game scoring chart. He was not the second likeliest or third likeliest or maybe 150th likeliest.
Adebayo is a good player, a three-time All-Star, but his career scoring average is 16.1 points per game.
His single-game career high before Tuesday was 41. Much higher on the hypothetical list of would-be Kobe-passers was Wembanyama.
The 7-foot-4 Frenchman already has a 50-point game on his career ledger — also against the Wizards — and he is only 22.
“He’s going to have a game like that for sure,” Spurs guard Dylan Harper said.
Before Adebayo went atomic on Tuesday, the closest anyone had come to reaching Bryant’s mark — let alone Chamberlain’s — was Luka Doncic, who scored 73 against Atlanta in January 2024 as a member of the Dallas Mavericks.
The Spurs record belongs to center David Robinson, who scored a career-high 71 points against the Clippers to clinch the 1993-94 NBA scoring title on the final day of the season.

Wembanyama’s best shot at an Adebayo-like night so far came in February in Los Angeles, when he posted 25 points in the first quarter against a depleted Lakers squad.
After building a lead as high as 40 in the second half, the Spurs did with Wembanyama what the Heat did not with Adebayo. Coach Mitch Johnson sat Wembanyama for the entire fourth quarter.
Wembanyama finished with 40 points, becoming only the third player in the past 50 seasons to reach that mark in less than 27 minutes of court time.
“If we’d let him play that whole L.A. game, he’d be right up there too,” Harper said.
Wembanyama’s teammates acknowledge he is driven less by personal accolades than by team success.
At 24.2 points per game, Wembanyama is the lowest-scoring leading scorer among the top eight teams in the Western Conference, and yet the Spurs sit comfortably in second place.
“He’s coming for a (championship) ring,” Harper said.
For Wembanyama and the Spurs, however, Tuesday’s goings-on in Miami opened eyes as to what might be possible.
If Adebayo can go out and get 80 points, why not Wembanyama?
For now, the Spurs will simply tip their cap to Adebayo for making the unfathomable fathomable.
“If it was that easy, everyone would have 80 points,” Vassell said. “Obviously, it’s not.”
