San Antonio Spurs guard De’aaron Fox (4) and forward Victor Wembanyama (1) walk to the locker room as fans cheer them on following a 125-116 victory over the Boston Celtics at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Tuesday, March 10, 2026.

Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox downplayed his impressive playmaking of late.

“I’m just playing,” said Fox, who has amassed 28 assists against only five turnovers over the last three games.

But his coach and teammates see it differently. They say those numbers are proof of how Fox is coming on strong as the playoffs approach.

“He’s kicked it into another gear,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “The eye test proves it. His numbers prove it. That’s an adult who’s hitting his stride.”

Fox was an offensive force in Tuesday night’s 125-116 victory over Boston, finishing with 25 points on 11-of-14 shooting and a game-high nine assists against just a single turnover in 35 minutes.

“What I see from him is great decision-making and really being at peace with the basketball gods, not forcing things, doing the right play,” said Victor Wembanyama, who led the Spurs with 39 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks.

Told that Johnson believes he’s “hitting his stride,” Fox acknowledged he is trying to play his best ball of the season in preparation for his second career playoff appearance after helping Sacramento end a 16-year playoff drought in 2023.

“I just want to be at my peak physically and mentally towards the end of the season,” he said. “We’re getting there.”

A ninth-year pro, Fox, 28, said he’s learned through the years how to stay sharp through the course of the grueling 82-game regular season. In addition to his playmaking, he’s averaging 23.3 points over the last four games after scoring 19-plus in each of those outings.

For the season, Fox is averaging 19.0 points and 6.3 assists.

“It’s just maturing, learning how to take care of your body, doing a lot of things at home and just trying to be well-rested while also continuing to put the work in because you want to get better throughout the course of the season,” he said.

Rookie Dylan Harper put it this way: “He ain’t old, but with how long he’s been in the NBA, he kind of knows what to do, what not to do.”
