The All-Star Clippers forward, whose acrimonious departure from the Spurs in the summer of 2018 still earns him boos at the Frost Bank Center, said he has been impressed with how his former team has rebuilt itself into a contender.
“Probably nobody thought they’d be this good, this early,” Leonard said after the Spurs erased a 25-point deficit to beat the Clippers 116-112 on Friday. “They’ve got great individual players, a great coaching staff over there. The organization knows how to win basketball games here. They’re just putting it all together.”
During Leonard’s seven seasons with the Spurs, the club was one of the oldest in the NBA.
Now constructed around a 22-year-old superstar in Victor Wembanyama and a cast of recent lottery picks, the Spurs boast one of the league’s youngest rosters.
Leonard has noticed.
“The league is young now,” Leonard said. “It’s about pace and running. If you’ve got a shooting (center) like Wemby who can shoot threes and blocks shots, your chances are even higher to win.”
As for the question of whether the Spurs were ahead of schedule in their rebuild, Leonard said it was too soon to tell – but the signs are there.
“You never know,” Leonard said. “Nobody could say if they’re ahead of schedule or not. Obviously, we’ve got to see how it all plays out.”
