How the Spurs’ non-stop hustle gave them an edge against Detroit

San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) guards Detroit Pistons center Jalen Duren (0) at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Thursday, March 5, 2026. The Spurs defeated the Pistons, 121-106.
Detroit coach J.B. Bickerstaff told reporters before Thursday night’s game it’s incorrect to say the Spurs aren’t a physical team.
The Pistons are known as one of the NBA’s toughest teams, but Bickerstaff believes the Spurs also “play a physical brand of basketball.”
“I don’t think it gets mentioned as much, but when you’re that good defensively (you are physical),” Bickerstaff said of the Spurs, who rank third in the NBA in defensive rating (111.0). "And how they put pressure on the ball, how they do a great job of getting into guys, forcing the ball to their bigs, letting their bigs protect (the rim). You watch them offensively, they do a great job of screening.
“So they’re physical. I expect the team that’s the most physical with a purpose will be the team that comes out on top tonight.”
That turned out to be the Spurs, who downed the Pistons 121-106 for their second win over the East leaders in 11 days.
And, yes, they were the more physical team. One way that showed up was in their fierce determination to corral every 50-50 ball.
Two plays stood out: Rookie forward Carter Bryant diving on the court to track down a loose ball late in the third quarter and sixth man Keldon Johnson leaping over the scorer’s to keep a ball in play midway through the fourth.
“Detroit produces those types of games,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said when asked about the hustle plays by Bryant and Johnson. “It doesn’t always mean you got to go hit the guy on the other team. It’s just contact, competitiveness, a lot of flying around, and sometimes you fly on the floor, in the sidelines or into the bodies. And I thought we didn’t blink. We just tried to trust our instincts today.”
Spurs All-Star center Victor Wembanyama, who finished with 38 points and was plenty physical himself with 16 rebounds and five blocks in 39 minutes, also noticed the hustle plays by Bryant and Johnson.
“We praise that,” Wembanyama said. “We do praise it, and I think we even need to put a bigger emphasis on it because those are the details that get you wins that you’re not supposed to (get). There are many components in winning games and winning championships, and over a season, you will need a little bit of luck at some time, right? But that luck, we can make it happen (with hustle). We can influence it. And these are the things that make luck happen.”
