Man shot twice in Frost Bank Center parking lot after Spurs game

Sheriff Javier Salazar gives a tour of the Bexar County Jail to the San Antonio Express-News Editorial Board, December 9, 2025. A 48-year-old man was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center after he was shot shortly after 10 p.m. Thursday in the parking lot of the Frost Bank Center following the Spurs’ win over the Detroit Pistons. The victim is in stable condition, Salazar said.
A 48-year-old man was shot in a parking lot at the Frost Bank Center after the Spurs game against Detroit on Thursday night, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said.
The victim was in stable condition when he was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center, where he underwent surgery, Salazar said.
The alleged shooter, a 47-year-old man, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after he was arrested at the scene by Bexar County Sheriff’s deputies, Salazar said.
The shooting occurred at 10:04 p.m. after the incident began with what Salazar called a “minor crash” in parking lot 7, far from the arena.
“The person we believe hit (an) unrelated vehicle was eventually the shooter,” Salazar said. “Several bystanders attempted to stop him. They were videotaping his license plate to keep him from fleeing the scene of the crash. It appears then that the victim, also in a vehicle leaving the Spurs game, attempted to approach the shooter’s vehicle on foot and an argument ensued, and the shooter fired two shots from inside his vehicle.”
Salazar said the victim received immediate “life-saving measures” after being hit at least twice in the upper body.
“Thankfully, we’ve got a full crew here tonight of deputies,” Salazar said. “One of our deputies being a tactical medic actually had his medical kit with him and was able to administer life-saving measures almost immediately.”
Salazar said an off-duty nurse aided the deputy.
“They most likely saved his life,” Salazar said.
Salazar said deputies spotted a weapon inside the alleged shooter’s car.
“We’re going to be executing a search warrant,” Salazar said. “Now that time is on our side, we’re going to take our time and handle this case by the numbers.”
Salazar said the car that was struck by the shooting suspect was a minivan owned by a man in a wheelchair.
“That gentleman that owns the vehicle wasn’t even there when it happened,” Salazar said. “He was still making his way from the Spurs game.”
Salazar said the incident quickly escalated into a violent drama.
“At worst, this was going to be a minor crash,” he said. "Stick around, do the right thing and handle your business. These guys are not young teenagers. He’s certainly old enough to know better, the suspect. But stick around and handle your minor crash. What’s the worst that’s going to happen? He escalated this situation and the victim tried to do the right thing and get involved, this guy pulls a gun and then tries to kill somebody.
“That’s just way beyond what this needs to be.”
