Mikal Bridges, Knicks bring Spurs’ winning streak to a grinding halt
NEW YORK — The Spurs marched into Madison Square Garden on Sunday afternoon with one and only one goal in mind.
“For us,” guard De’Aaron Fox said, “we want to win our 12th game in a row.”
But with a resounding 114-89 victory every bit as dominating as the final score indicated, the New York Knicks not only put an end to the Spurs’ longest winning streak of the season they bludgeoned it to death, wrapped it in plastic and dumped it in the East River.
Mikel Bridges had 25 points and five steals and Jalen Brunson poured in 24 points with seven assists, as New York held the Spurs to their lowest-scoring outing of the season.
The Knicks used a 26-2 run in the first half to seize control of the game and never let the Spurs up for air.
“I think it’s good for us to see this kind of adversity,” said Spurs star Victor Wembanyama, whose team had not lost since Jan. 31 in Charlotte. “We want to play the best teams. This is a top playoff team. They know what it’s like. They gave us a good showing today.”
The defeat was the Spurs’ first on their rodeo road trip, which began 7-0. The trek, which was already set to be the first winning rodeo trip since 2016-17, concludes Tuesday in Philadelphia.
Wembanyama ended with 25 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks — but also seven turnovers — as the Spurs (43-17) continued their seven-season run of Madison Square Garden misery.
Coming into Sunday, Wembanyama had traditionally enjoyed some of his best NBA performances at the Knicks’ expense.
He averaged 31.8 points in his four previous meetings with New York, his most against any single opponent. That number included a 42-point opus in his most recent visit to Madison Square Garden on Christmas Day 2024.
Wembanyama, however, has yet to emerge from the Garden victorious in three tries, which does not make him unique in the Spurs’ locker room.
After Sunday, the Spurs still have not won in New York’s home arena since 2019. The only player remaining from that season’s roster is Keldon Johnson, who did not play as a rookie the Spurs’ most recent win in New York.
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said games like Sunday’s are important building blocks to a playoff run, win or lose.
“It’s going to continue to get like this as the season goes on,” he said. “It’s going to test your poise and composure. It’s going to test your physicality and mettle. We have to understand this is what it’s going to feel like.”
Boosted by a stifling defense, the Knicks (39-22) ensured the Spurs would not break their Madison Square Garden curse Sunday.
The Spurs shot 42%, including 9 of 34 from 3-point range. Their 22 turnovers, which lead to 24 Knicks points, did not help, either.
Besides Wembanyama, Devin Vassell (18 points) and Stephon Castle (13), no other Spurs player reached double figures.
The Spurs’ bench — an unabashed plus throughout their winning streak — managed only 23 points Sunday.
“Their physicality on the basketball was apparent,” Mitch Johnson said. “It was a well-coached, well-executed, well-connected performance from their whole group.”
The Spurs began the afternoon matinee looking like 12 in a row wasn’t so far-fetched. With New York missing 11 of its first 13 shots, the Spurs grabbed an early 12-point lead on a Castle 3-pointer with 4:05 remaining.
“The first 10 minutes roughly couldn’t have gone any better than us,” Johnson said.
Then it all came to a crashing halt.
From there, the Spurs managed only two points in the next 7:57 as the Knicks went ahead by as many as 15 before halftime.
The possession that turned things New York’s way was emblematic of the Spurs’ rough afternoon at the Garden.
With 1:13 to play in the first quarter, Mitchell Robinson missed a pair of free throws for the Knicks. O.G. Anunoby secured the rebound for New York, and Bruson drew a foul on Spurs rookie Dylan Harper officials ruled to be flagrant.
Bruson made two of three foul shots, then — with the extra possession afforded by the flagrant foul — drew another foul on Harper while sinking a mid-range jumper.
“That started the run,” Mitch Johnson said.
That five-point possession kick-started a spurt of 19 consecutive points for the Knicks. It was the biggest run the Spurs’ have allowed all season and did not end until Vassell stopped the bleeding with a jumper at the 8:08 mark of the second quarter.
“That stretch got them going," Mitch Johnson said. "That stretch led us to be very hesitant, very indecisive, very on our back foot. It felt like we were in quicksand both ways.”
The Knicks would not let the Spurs off the deck in the second half. Any time the Spurs cut their deficit to single digits, New York seemed to answer with a big 3-pointer — from Bridges or Brunson or, occasionally, Mohamed Diawara.
Wembanyama described his latest loss at Madison Square Garden this way:
“We gave them life,” he said. “And I think that was the game.”
When the beating was over, the Knicks left the floor to a Madison Square Garden standing over.
The Spurs, meanwhile, head to Philadelphia with a new one and only one goal.
Winning one in a row.
