TORONTO - One of the Spurs’ weaknesses plagued them in Wednesday night’s 110-107 victory over the Toronto Raptors: free throw shooting.
The Spurs entered Thursday night’s game at Brooklyn ranked 18th in the NBA in free throw efficiency at 78.1% after shooting just 56.5% (13 of 23) against the Raptors.
The Spurs hit just 4 of 10 in the fourth period, including missing 4 of 6 in the final 16 seconds (Dylan Harper 0 of 2, De’Aaron Fox 1 of 2, Victor Wembanyama 1 of 2).
“Thank God we got some rebounds (after those misses),” said Harper, who rushed in to grab his miss with 12.5 seconds left and the Spurs leading 108-106 after Wembanyama and Toronto’s Jakob Poetlt battled for the ball.
Harper’s misses with 16 seconds left were his only attempts of the game on a night he scored 15 points. Fox scored 20 but was 2 of 8 at the foul line for the game after going 1 of 4 in the fourth.
Wembanyama finished with 12 points after he hit 5 of 6 from the free throw line.
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson and Wembanyama said they aren’t concerned about the bad night at the foul line, chalking it up to the ebbs and flows of the season.
“It’s a long season. … It’s going to happen. It’s human nature,” Johnson said. “…But I thought when push came to shove, we did a good job of (overcoming some problems) and happy to see us kind of fight through a tough night in a few different ways.”
“Obviously, it’s something we have to address,” Wembanyama said. “But it can go up and down. We should have made more free throws, but I’m not concerned about it.”
