AUSTIN — The Spurs are clearly starting to feel comfortable in their home away from home at the Moody Center.

With Victor Wembanyama packing the box score, the Spurs rolled off a 139-122 victory on Saturday that gave them a two-game sweep of the so-called “Interstate-35 series” for the first time in its four-season history.

Two nights after defeating Phoenix in the same building, the Spurs put the hammer down against a Kings team that hasn’t won in more than a month.

Saturday marked the Kings’ 16th consecutive defeat, extending a franchise record.

Wembanyama set the tone early and late on his way to 28 points, 15 rebounds, six assists and four blocks. De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle scored 18 points apiece for the Spurs, who improved 40-16 to clinch their first 40-win season since 2018-19.

With one more win, the Spurs can sew up their first non-losing season in just as long.

Keegan Murray led Sacramento with 20 points, while rookie center Maxim Raynaud added 16 points and 12 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end. DeMar DeRozan chipped in 18 points for the Kings, who dropped to an NBA-worst 12-46.

Here are three takeaways from Saturday’s victory, which improved the Spurs to 5-3 all-time in Austin:

1. The degree of difficulty goes up from here

The victory was the Spurs’ eighth in a row, equaling their longest winning streak of the season. It put them at 8-0 in February.

Each of the opponents during that streak either own a sub.-500 record or were decimated by injuries to All-Stars.

Some were both.

Still, give the Spurs credit for taking care of the schedule in front of them.

Seven of the wins during their steak came by double digits. The one that did not — the 112-103 triumph over Orlando that kick-started it — came by nine.

The degree of difficulty only goes up from here.

After departing Austin, the Spurs embark on the final five road games of their rodeo trip. That portion begins Monday in Detroit, against a Pistons team out in front of the Eastern Conference.

Of the Spurs next 12 opponents, only one — the Brooklyn Nets — are not currently in position for a playoff or play-in berth.

The Spurs have been great at taking care of business during their eight-game winning streak. The next stretch of games will be important for testing their playoff readiness.

2. A French connection turned French competition

Raynaud and Wembanyama have known each other for years.

“He’s like a brother to me,” Wembanyama said.

But not a little brother, Wembanyama stressed.

At 22 years and 320 days, Raynaud is 272 days older than his Spurs counterpart.

Wembanyama made sure to dominate in the first NBA meeting between the pair of French big men.

A 22-year-old rookie, who the Kings selected in the second round, Reynaud had 10 points and 10 points by halftime, already posting his third double-double in the past four games.

With the Kings in full-on playing-out-the-string mode, Sacramento will likely take a good long look at Raynauld over the final six weeks of the season.

Wembanyama, meanwhile, appears to be shifting into beast mode.

He set the tone early Saturday, blocking shots on each of Sacramento’s first three possessions.

With the Spurs pulling away late, Wembanyama put his unmistakeable stamp, completing a windmill-style driving dunk to put the Spurs up by 15 with 9:40 to go.

No matter what the final scoreboard at the Moody Center read, this much was certain: It was a good night for fans of the French national team.

3. DeRozan still invested in Spurs’ rise

Saturday was not DeRozan’s first trip to Austin.

During his three seasons with the Spurs, DeRozan made several drives up Interstate-35 to watch newcomer Keldon Johnson play in G League games.

Though on his second team since leaving San Antonio in 2021, DeRozan is still invested in the Spurs’ rise.

DeRozan said he proud of the strides Johnson and Devin Vassell have made since he left, going from young players trying to figure out the league to key pieces on one of the NBA’s top squads.

The Spurs, meanwhile, tip their cap to DeRozan for the foundation he helped put in place.

“I think he was probably a little undervalued or understated just because we wanted to win some more games than we did during that time,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “But when you had some of the young guys that we had at that time, DeMar’s quiet leadership played a big part in a lot of those guys growing up.”
