From basketball to tacos: Austin a special spot for Spurs’ Julian Cham

Then-Spurs rookie Julian Champagnie celebrates a 3-pointer he sank during the first half of the Spurs’ 129-127 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers at the Moody Center on April 6, 2023 in Austin. The forward said Saturday he has fond memories of that game after pumping in 24 points off the bench for one of his first big outings as a Spur.
AUSTIN — After playing in Austin the last four seasons, Spurs forward Julian Champagnie ranks it among his favorite cities along with San Antonio and his hometown of New York.
“San Antonio is like San Antonio and then New York is New York and Austin’s right in the middle,” he said. “I like it. It’s like a smaller city, but it has things to do with fun, good food. Really good tacos here. And they got some water here, too. They got the lakes and stuff, so that works out.”
Austin also holds a special place in his heart because it was the site of one of his first big games as a Spur. In just his 13th appearance with the team, he came off the bench to pump in 24 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including 5 of 9 from 3-point range, to help the Spurs beat Portland 129-127 on April 6, 2023, the team’s first outing in Austin.
The performance was a major confidence boost as he tried to gain a foothold in the NBA as an undrafted rookie out of St. John’s.
“It was kind of like the part of my career where I tell myself, ‘Well, you could do this. It’s not going to be too hard. You can figure it out,’” Champagnie said.
Champagnie also played a handful of games in the G League as a rookie with the Austin Spurs. But his best memories are of playing with the big club at Moody Center.
“They love it,” he said. “Honestly and truly, every time we come out here, the energy is good. Going around the city, they notice us. Fans are excited to come here. They pack the arena, so it’s been good.”
